About the journal

Aims and Scope

The Journal of Religious History is an international, fully refereed journal which publishes articles and reviews current work in the history of religions and their relationship with all aspects of human experience. With high quality international contributors, the journal explores religion and its related subjects, along with debates on comparative method and theory in religious history.

Guidelines for Submissions

The Journal of Religious History is an international, fully refereed journal which publishes articles and reviews current work in the history of religions and their relationship with all aspects of human experience. The Journal of Religious History follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th ed. A brief style guide was published in the June 1997 issue of the Journal at 247-8. Contributirs will also find this information at the JRH web site. For all matters of style with the exception of spelling which will continue to follow the Oxford English Dictionary. Authors may also refer to Kate L. Turabian's short guide to the Chicago style, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses and Dissertations, 6th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996).

2. All Authors publishing in the Journal will be asked to sign an Exclusive Licence Form. In signing the form it is assumed that authors have obtained permission to use any copyrighted or previously published material. All authors must read and agree to the conditions outlined in the form, and must sign the form or agree that the corresponding author can sign on their behalf. Articles cannot be published until a signed form has been received. Authors can download the form from http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/jorh_elf.pdf.

3. The Journal publishes regular thematic issues on special topics. Correspondence about potential topics for future thematic issues should be directed to the Editor.

4. Books for review and correspondence about reviews should be sent to the Review Editor, Dr Julie Smith, History A18, University of Sydney, NSW 2006, Australia. 

5. Two copies of regular submissions should be posted to the Editor, Journal of Religious History. Authors are advised to retain a copy as manuscripts are not returned except by request. Disk versions are not required.

6. Submissions should include a cover sheet, preferably letterhead, with the title of the paper, name and title of the author, institutional affiliation and teaching or research post (if relevant), postal address, phone, fax, and email. If accepted for peer review, papers will be assessed anonymously. Except for the cover sheet, all identification should be removed.

 

7. Authors who require the return of any submitted material that is accepted for publication should inform the Editorial Office after acceptance. If no indication is given that author material should be returned, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy and electronic material two months after publication.

8. Papers should be typed or word-processed, double-spaced, numbered, and printed on sturdy paper with ample margins. Footnotes should also be double-spaced, numbered consecutively and placed at the end of the paper.

9. The Journal of Religious History restricts the length of published articles to a maximum of about 8,000 words including footnotes.

10. Except for brief quotations of no more than a line, the body of all papers should be in English.

11. Illustrations, tables, maps and figures should appear on separate pages following the footnotes. They must be numbered consecutively and include captions which identify the source of any image or data. Clear photocopies are acceptable for submission but glossy prints are required for publication. Authors are responsible for obtaining and paying for all copyright and reproduction charges.

12. Authors are urged to double check all references ensuring that they are complete and include accurate page numbers. References to manuscript, archival and printed government sources should follow recognised conventions and avoid ambiguous contractions.

13. Footnotes should be numbered consecutively and follow Chicago 14th note reference forms (Turabian 'N') NOT previous issues of the Journal of Religious History. Some examples follow:

Abbreviations should follow the Oxford Classical Dictionary.

13. Subsequent citations to a work previously cited should provide only the author's last name and the page number(s) and, in the case of citations to more than one work by the same author, a short title of the work. Do not use Ibid. or other Latin contractions.

14. Author Services enables authors to track their article, once it has been accepted, through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated emails at key stages of production so they do not need to contact the production editor to check on progress. 15. Authors should note that Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems. Unfortunately, the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time as a stable production version is released. Please use Word's 'Save As' option therefore to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.
