About the journal
About the Journal
The Journal of Religion promotes critical and systematic inquiry into the meaning and import of religion. Not limited by ideological orientation, JR embraces all areas of theology¡ªbiblical, historical, ethical, and constructive¡ªas well as other types of religious studies, including literary, social, psychological, and philosophical.
The Editors welcome contributions from any area of religious studies that would be of interest to a scholarly audience in theology and constructive religious thought. Articles that present highly specialized research in limited areas of inquiry also may be considered for publication provided that their findings, in the judgment of the Editors, have significance for a wider readership.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
As of 12 January 2007, authors are encouraged to submit new manuscripts via Editorial Manager at http://jr.edmgr.com.
Statement of PolicyThe Journal of Religion is one of the publications by which the Divinity School of The University of Chicago seeks to promote critical, hermeneutical, historical, and constructive inquiry into religion. While expecting articles to advance scholarship in their respective fields in a lucid, cogent, and fresh way, the Journal is especially interested in areas of research with a broad range of implications for scholars of religion, or cross-disciplinary relevance. The Editors welcome submissions in theology, religious ethics, and philosophy of religion, as well as articles that approach the role of religion in culture and society from a historical, sociological, psychological, linguistic, or artistic standpoint. Articles that present highly specialized research in limited areas of inquiry may be considered provided that their findings, in the judgment of the Editors, have significance for a wider readership. Submissions may not be concurrently under consideration for publication elsewhere.
While it is our policy to require the assignment of copyright on most journal articles, we do not usually request assignment of copyright for other contributions. Although the copyright to such a contribution may remain with the author, it is understood that, in return for publication, the Journal has the nonexclusive right to publish the contribution and the continuing right, without limit, to include the contribution as part of any reprinting of the issue and/or volume of the Journal in which the contribution first appeared by any means and in any format, including computer-assisted storage and readout, in which the issue and/or volume may be reproduced by the publisher or by its licensed agencies.
Preparing Files for Online Submission
The Editors generally take the optimal length of an article to be 20¨C25 manuscript pages, not including notes, but lengthier submissions of exceptional quality will receive full consideration. Manuscripts should conform to The Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition). The Journal of Religion requires that authors use endnotes rather than footnotes, include all bibliographic information within the notes, and double space the entire manuscript. Review articles should be 8¨C12 pages.
Manuscripts must be in English and submitters should prepare a separate document with a title page that includes the names, e-mail addresses, and affiliations of all authors and a 100-word abstract. Authors' names should not appear anywhere in the manuscript.
File formats
The preferred format for submitting manuscripts online is Microsoft Word (.doc files). If you are unable to submit a Microsoft Word file, Editorial Manager will also accept Word Perfect (.wpd), Adobe Acrobat (.pdf), and Rich Text (.rtf) files.
File content
Manuscripts are preferred as separate files for text and for figures. Alternatively, you may submit a single file with figures, tables, and images included in the main document. You must also submit a cover letter in a second file, either in the same format as your main text file or in plain text format (ASCII file).
Submitting Your Manuscript
Go to http://jr.edmgr.com to submit your manuscript. The system relies on automated processing to create an Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) file from your submission. Step-by-step instructions will guide you through the process, and you should receive an e-mail confirmation from the system when your submission is complete. If you have problems, please contact journal-of-religion@uchicago.edu for assistance.
There is no fee for submission. If your manuscript is accepted for publication, you will receive more detailed instructions for preparing your manuscript for publication. Authors of manuscripts accepted for publication also will receive fifty complimentary offprints of their article after publication.
