Praised as "a magnificent scholarly journal" by Choice magazine, the Journal of Modern Greek Studies is the only scholarly periodical to focus exclusively on modern Greece. The Journal includes critical analyses of Greek social, cultural, and political affairs, covering the period from the late Byzantine Empire to the present and is published for the Modern Greek Studies Association.
Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines
The Journal of Modern Greek Studies (JMGS) is a semi-annual publication devoted to all aspects of modern Greek scholarship. It welcomes articles presenting original research on, and critical analysis of, the culture and society of the Greek-speaking peoples chiefly from the late Byzantine period to the present. Articles covering earlier periods will be considered in cases where the material studied has a bearing on Greece¹s modern culture or society. The journal is edited by a board of scholars appointed by the Modern Greek Studies Association, of which it is the official publication.
1. The Journal of Modern Greek Studies (JMGS) editorial staff assumes that submission of a research paper implies that no other journal or publisher is currently considering the paper for publication.
2. JMGS does not publish previously published papers. Its policy requires the assignment of copyright from all contributors. However, each contributing author have the following nonexclusive rights: (1) to use the Article in his/her own teaching activities; (2) to publish the Article, or permit its publication, as a part of any book he/she may write; (3) to include the Article in his/her own personal or departmental (but not institutional) database or on-line site. The contributing author can do all of the above provided that he/she agrees to properly credit the Journal of Modern Greek Studies as the original place of publication and the Johns Hopkins University Press as the original publisher.
3. Submissions undergo anonymous (blind) peer review. The peer review process usually takes approximately four months. Each contributing author is notified about the status of his/her submission as soon as the editor receives the peer reviews.
4. The author's name, affiliation, and address should appear only on the title page of the research paper and nowhere else. Manuscripts should have a scholarly format, including a 150-word abstract, endnotes and references cited. Manuscripts should be typed and the lines should be double-spaced. A style sheet for contributors is available on the web http://www.mgsa.org or http://www.humanities.uci.edu/classics/MGSA/jmgsstyl.pdf.
5. Submissions must be in English, but quotations, terms, and references in other languages (especially Greek) are encouraged when they will advance the argument of the manuscript. In such instances, accompanying English translations are strongly advised.
6. Manuscripts may be submitted either by postal mail or by email (email is the preferred method).
Manuscripts submitted for consideration by postal mail should be sent to
Professor Peter Allen, Editor Journal of Modern Greek Studies Department of Anthropology Rhode Island College Providence, RI 02908 Fax: 401/456-9736 Email: pallen@ric.edu
Four photocopies of each submission are required. The four photocopies should be accompanied by the research paper in a computer disk (Word PC, not Mac).
