About the journal

This journal has established itself as an internationally respected forum for the presentation and discussion of recent research in the history of the British Empire and Commonwealth and in comparative European colonial experiences. Particular attention is given to imperial policy and rivalries; colonial rule and local response; the rise of nationalism; the process of decolonization and the transfer of power and institutions; the evolution of the Imperial and Commonwealth association in general; and the expansion and transformation of British culture. The journal also features a substantial review section of recent literature.

Peer Review Policy:
All research articles published in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review which involves initial editor screening and independent assessment normally by two anonymous referees.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for Authors:

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Articles submitted to The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication. If another version of the article is under consideration by another publication, or has been, or will be published elsewhere, authors should indicate this clearly at the time of submission

Each manuscript should be submitted in duplicate. Articles should be typewritten on A4/Letter paper, on one side only, double-spaced and with ample margins. All pages, including notes (numbered at the end), maps, references, tabular material and appendices, should be numbered consecutively.

There is no standard length for articles, but 8000 words (including notes and references) is a useful target.

All diagrams, charts and graphs should be referred to as figures and consecutively numbered. Tables should be kept to a minimum and contain only essential data. Each figure and table must be given an Arabic numeral, followed by a heading, to be referred to in the text.

Details of the author's institutional affiliation, full address and other contact information should be included on a separate cover sheet. Any acknowledgements should be included on the cover sheet, as should a note of the exact length of the article (in words).

Following acceptance for publication, articles should be submitted on high density 3 ?inch disks (IBM PC or Macintosh compatible) in rich text format (.RTF) together with a hard copy. To facilitate the typesetting process, notes should be grouped together at the end of the file. Tables should also be placed at the end of the file. Tables should be saved as text using the appropriate function within your word processor. If this function is not available then tables should be prepared using tabs. Any diagrams or maps should be copied to a separate disk separately in uncompressed .TIF or .JPG formats in individual files. These should be prepared in black and white. Tints should be avoided, use open patterns instead. If maps and diagrams cannot be prepared electronically, they should be presented on good quality white paper. If mathematics is included 1/2 is preferred over ?

Each disk should be labelled with the journal's name, article title, lead author's name and software used. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that where copyright materials are included within an article the permission of the copyright holder has been obtained. Confirmation of this should be included on a separate sheet included with the disk.

Manuscripts should be sent to:
Professor Tony Stockwell,
Department of History,
Royal Holloway, University of London,
Egham Hill,
Englefield Green,
Surrey
TW20 0EX, UK

Manuscripts may also be submitted to the editors by email at the following address: tony@ajstockwell.co.uk

Referencing
The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History follows the Chicago Humanities referencing system. Detailed instructions on reference formats can be found by clicking here, or by consulting the Fifteenth Edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

Style
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts conform to the journal style. The editors will not undertake retyping of manuscripts before publication. A guide to style and presentation is obtainable from the editors, or from the publisher: Taylor & Francis Ltd., 4 Park Square, Milton Park, Abingdon, OX14 4RN, UK. Acknowledgements should be in the form of an unnumbered note appearing first in the Notes section.

Quotations should be in single quotation marks, double within single, and the closing quotation mark should precede the punctuation, except where a complete sentence is quoted. Long quotations of five or more lines should be indented without parenthesis.

Capitals should be used sparingly, as for departments of state, but not office-holders, and where they may be necessary to avoid ambiguity.

British spelling should be used throughout. Common foreign words such as regime, role, elite are to be unaccented. The -ise ending (in recognise, organise, realise, etc.) is preferred; per cent, not %.

Dates should be given in the form: 28 January 1912; 1914-18; the 1930s. In notes, the name of all months except March-July inclusive should be abbreviated.

Notes should be numbered consecutively through the article with a raised numeral corresponding to the list of notes placed at the end. In this list numerals should not be raised and should be followed by a full point, not a bracket.

Table 1 and Figure 1 should be used when referring to tables and figures in the text.
