"The Journal of Contemporary History is one of the outstanding learned journals of history in the English-speaking world." Times Literary Supplement

The Journal of Contemporary History is an international forum for the analysis of twentieth century history. Now over forty years old, the journal has long been established as essential reading for all scholars in contemporary European and international history.

The Journal of Contemporary History publishes articles covering a broad range of historical approaches including social, economic, political, diplomatic, intellectual and cultural. It is noted both for its intellectual rigour and the accessible style of its contributions.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission Guidelines:

Information for Contributors

Manuscripts should be a maximum of 7000 words including not more than 100 footnotes, which should be for reference only. Authors should submit their papers by email only to jchoffice@sagepub.co.uk. Copyright in all material published in the Journal is assigned to the Publishers. English spelling should be used throughout except in the case of words where the American 'z' has generally replaced the 's', e.g. organize. Do not make use of capitals unless essential, e.g. fascist or communist need not have capitals. Dates should not be abbreviated and should wherever possible be given without punctuation, e.g. 'On 3 January 1925 Mussolini said . . .'. Initials like USSR, NATO, should not have stops between letters. Single quotes should be used throughout. Notes and references will be printed as footnotes. However, these should be numbered consecutively, and typed on a separate sheet. In composing footnotes the following style should be observed:

1 Max Weber, trans. Frank H. Knight, General Economic History (New York 1950), 54.

2 Ibid.

3 C.J. Hill, 'Great Britain and the Saar Plebiscite of 13 January 1935', Journal of Contemporary History, 9, 2 (April 1974), 121-43.

4 Weber, op. cit., 38-9.

Thus ibid. and op. cit. will be capitalized only if they begin a note - ibid., op. cit., e.g., i.e. and similar commonly used abbreviations are printed in Roman, not italic, and they should therefore not be underlined. Titles of books and journals and the more uncommon foreign words will be italicized. No p. or pp. are printed to stand for 'page' - page numbers stand alone following a comma. It is not necessary to give the name of the publisher, except where, as in government publications, this takes the place of the editor.

New sections should be indicated by a break and should not have subheadings.

All manuscripts considered for publication will be submitted to external review.

All manuscripts should be sent to the Editorial Office:

Journal of Contemporary History, 4 Devonshire Street, London W1W 5BH, UK.

All subscription inquiries should be addressed to the Publisher:

SAGE Publications Ltd, 1 Oliver's Yard, 55 City Road, London EC1Y 1SP

SAGE Publications Inc, PO Box 5096, Thousand Oaks, CA 91359,

SAGE Publications India, 32 M-Block Market, New Delhi 110048
