Annals of Science was launched in 1936 as an independent review dealing with the development of science since the Renaissance. Now established as the leading scholarly journal in the field, its scope has widened to cover the history of technology and medicine, as well as developments since classical antiquity, and to include articles in French and German. Contributions from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, the USA and Russia bear testimony to its international appeal. Each issue includes a comprehensive book reviews section and essay reviews on a group of books on a broader level. The editor is supported by an active international board. A unique feature of the journal is the reproduction of selected illustrations in colour.

Readership

The Journal is directed to all those interested in the evolution of science and technology and its impact on the development of related arts and industries.

All published research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial screening by the editor and anonymous refereeing by at least two expert referees.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for Authors

Further information about the journal including links to the online sample copy and contents pages can be found on the journal homepage.

1. Introduction

It is essential that authors prepare their manuscripts according to established specifications. Failure to follow them may result in your paper being delayed and the effectiveness of the search capabilities offered by electronic delivery will depend upon the care used by authors in preparing their manuscripts. Therefore, contributors are strongly encouraged to read these instructions carefully before preparing a manuscript for submission, and to check the manuscript for compliance with these notes before submitting it for publication.

2. Submitting a Paper to Annals of Science

Submissions should be made online at the Annals of Science Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged on to the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

We strongly encourage authors to submit their manuscripts using the online submission system. If you are unable to use this system, you may submit your paper to the Editor by email, who will enter it into the system acting as your proxy. Please send your paper and all accompanying illustrations as attachments in an email to annals.science@utoronto.ca. If you would like a particular Editorial Board Member to handle your submission, please mention this in your letter.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. Make sure to remove identifying labels from the document properties. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as "File not for review".

Submissions should be created using a standard word processing program, such as MSWORD, WordPerfect or PDF. If you have any queries on submission, please contact annals.science@utoronto.ca.

3. General Guidelines

Annals of Science considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Annals of Science, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Annals of Science incurs and their papers will not be published.

Annals of Science contains articles, essay reviews and book reviews. Articles must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees.

The number of colour pages within the annual page budget is limited. Authors should restrict their use of colour to situations where it is necessary . The Editor will determine which illustrations will appear in colour in the printed journal. In addition, authors may pay to publish colour illustrations, but please consult the publisher regarding cost before submission. Figures which appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.

Writing your paper

  • For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
  • Manuscripts should normally not exceed forty pages double spaced. Only in exceptional circumstances will the Editor consider longer manuscripts.
  • The languages of the Journal are English, French and German. Non-English papers must be prefaced with an extended English-language summary. Extracts from published works must be translated into the language of the paper.
  • Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout including the reference section, with wide (3 cm or 1.25 inch) margins.
  • All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of manuscripts.
  • Abstracts of approximately 200 words are required for all papers submitted and should precede the text of a paper - see Notes on Style.
  • Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; main text; acknowledgments; appendixes (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list). In the anonymized copy of the manuscript, acknowledgments as well as author information should be omitted.
  • Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially, using a decimal system for subsections.
  • Authors must adhere to SI units, except where older units are required for historical appropriateness. Units are not italicised.
  • When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark authors must use the symbol ?or TM or alternatively a footnote can be inserted using the wording below:

This article includes a word that is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark. Its inclusion does not imply it has acquired for legal purposes a non-proprietary or general significance, nor is any other judgement implied concerning its legal status.

4. Copyright

It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

Exceptions are made for authors of Crown or US Government employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.

Details on copyright permission. Copies of the permission letters should be sent with the manuscript to the Editors.

6. Early Electronic Offprints

Free article access: Corresponding authors can receive 50 free reprints, free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Complimentary reprints are available through Rightslink?and additional reprints can be ordered through Rightslink?when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk

7. Electronic Processing

We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

  • Figures must be saved individually and separate from text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
  • Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.
  • Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for each illustration should be descriptive of theillustration , e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
  • Files should be saved in one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript, JPEG, or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.
