About Annals
From the analytical engine to the supercomputer, from Pascal to von Neumann, from punched cards to CD-ROMs -- the IEEE Annals of the History of Computing covers the breadth of computer history. Featuring scholarly articles by leading computer scientists and historians, as well as firsthand accounts by computer pioneers, the Annals is the primary publication for recording, analyzing, and debating the history of computing. The Annals also serves as a focal point for people interested in uncovering and preserving the records of this exciting field. The quarterly publication is an active center for the collection and dissemination of information on historical projects and organizations, oral history activities, and international conferences.
Instructions to Authors
Author Center
The Author Center provides details, organized alphabetically, on what IEEE Annals of the History of Computing magazine requires when submitting a manuscript for review. Please select from the menu below for information:
Abstract
The abstract should be no more than 150 words and should describe the overall focus of your manuscript.
Accepted Manuscripts
You cannot submit materials for accepted articles through Manuscript Central. Your acceptance letter will have more information in this regard. If you have questions, you may contact the Magazine Assistant.
Biography and Photograph
Send a black-and-white digital photograph of each author, no smaller than passport size, and a biographical sketch of each author with the final, accepted manuscript. In 60 words or less, the bio should list current position, technical interests, education, professional honors, professional affiliations (optional), and contact address.
Contributing Authors
Please list all authors who contributed to your manuscript. If necessary, you may change the list of contributing authors when you upload a revised version.
File Types
We accept plain text (ASCII), MS Word, RTF, Postscript, and PDF. Any file that you upload to Manuscript Central will convert into a PDF.
Our system has size limitations on individual files. Please do not attempt to upload a file larger than 20 MB.
Set the paper size in your text document to 8 1/2 inches wide by 11 inches high, rather than A4. Margins should be at least one inch on the left and right and at least 1.5 inches from the top and bottom. Your manuscript must have page numbers on every page, at least one inch from the bottom of each page.

Illustrations
All illustrations must be cited in the text, numbered, and have descriptive captions. Graphs should show only the coordinates (or at most the major grid lines) to avoid a dense, hard-to-read illustration. Detailed graphics guidelines are available here. If your article is accepted, be prepared to submit separate files for each figure. Please label the files Figure 1, 2, and etc. If the images have multiple parts, please label the files Figure 1, 1a, 1b, and etc. Please send only the images that are in the article.
Image Permissions
It is the author's responsibility to ensure that he/she has permission to publish images in print and online in our digital library. If the author did not create the image, he/she must acquire permission from the owner of the image. If the image has been published elsewhere, authors must secure permission from the publisher and pay any necessary fees required. We cannot publish an image without the consent of the image's owner. We have a straightforward, easy form that authors can use to acquire permission. Contact the Magazine Assistant if you have questions or you need the form.
Keywords/Taxonomy
Please enter a minimum of three keywords when uploading your manuscript. Expert reviewers in your topic area are linked to your manuscript by keywords.
Keywords should closely reflect your topic and optimally characterize your manuscript.
Login Instructions
Everyone who submits a manuscript must have a Manuscript Central account.
If you have previously volunteered in any capacity for the IEEE Computer Society, you should have an account. Please click on CHECK FOR AN EXISTING ACCOUNT. Try to avoid creating a duplicate account.
If you have not volunteered with the IEEE Computer Society click on CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT. The bolded fields must be completed in order to continue the process. Please note your user ID and password.
Also, if you anticipate that you will need to be notified at two email addresses, please include the second email address (CC). You may mark this email address active or inactive as needed.
If you have technical difficulties with your account, please contact Support by clicking the Get Help Now button in the upper right corner of your screen or contact the Magazine Assistant .

Each table and figure is counted as 200 words (to account for white space needed). Any article that exceeds this word count may be rejected automatically without going through the review process. Include a title page containing your submission's title and the names, affiliations, and contact information for all authors.
Memoirs, which discuss an individual?s life, career, and accomplishments may be of any length, but usually do not exceed 6,400 words, including photographs and other materials.

Reviewers are chosen to review manuscripts based on their area(s) of expertise. . You can login to Manuscript Central and check the status of your manuscript anytime during the process. Normally, you will receive a final decision within four to six months.
Only about 25% of all manuscripts submitted to IEEE Annals are published, and the manuscripts we publish generally receive very positive reviews.
Submissions
Concurrent Submissions
We do not allow submission to more than one publication at one time. If we determine that a manuscript has been submitted to another publication before IEEE Annals' review process is completed, your manuscript will immediately be rejected.
Duplicate Submissions
We do NOT accept duplicate submissions of manuscripts. Please do NOT attempt to enter or upload a modified version of a manuscript that's already in the system as a new submission.
Identical submissions will be immediately rejected.
Preliminary/Conference Version(s)
If any portion of your submission has appeared or will appear in a conference proceedings, please include a copy of your previously published manuscript along with your IEEE Annals submission and a summary of changes identifying the differences between the two. Manuscript Central will instruct you on how to do this.
Please be aware that editors and reviewers are required to check the submitted manuscript to determine whether a sufficient amount of new material has been added to warrant publication. The IEEE Computer Society's guidelines are that authors should only submit original work that has neither appeared elsewhere for publication, nor which is under review for another refereed publication. If authors have used their own previously published material as a basis for a new submission, they are required to cite the previous work(s) and very clearly indicate how the new submission offers substantively novel or different contributions beyond those of the previously published work(s). Any manuscript not meeting this criteria will be rejected. Copies of any previous published work affiliated with the new submission must also be included as supportive documentation upon submission.
If you have questions regarding this policy, please contact the Magazine Assistant.
Supplemental Material
Supplemental material includes videos and extra graphics in addition to your completed manuscript. Please discuss and express your intent to submit this type of material with IEEE Annals' Magazine Assistant beforehand.
Uploading Instructions
Detailed information on uploading your manuscript is available. The system requires you to proof your files before completing the uploading process.
