About the journal

Aims and Scope

HYLE is a peer reviewed international journal dedicated to all philosophical aspects of chemistry. Articles deal with epistemological, methodological, foundational, and ontological problems of chemistry and its subfields; the peculiarities of chemistry and relations to technology, other scientific and non-scientific fields; aesthetical, ethical, and environmental matters in chemistry; as well as philosophically relevant facets of the history, sociology, linguistics, and education of chemistry. The journal offers top quality original articles and essays, book reviews, reports, and short biographies. Contributions are in English.

The journal combines general issues and special issues, such as on "Models in Chemistry" (5-2, 6-1, 6-2), "Ethics of Chemistry" (7-2, 8-1), "Aesthetics and Visualization in Chemistry" (9-1, 9-2), "Nanotech Challenges" (10-2, 11-1), and "The Public Image of Chemistry" (12-1, 12-2).

Distinguished philosophers, chemists, and historians of chemistry from 8 countries serve on the Editorial Board of HYLE.

The scope of the readership includes philosophers, historians of science, chemists, and chemistry teachers from over 64 countries.

HYLE combines autonomous scientific quality management (double blind peer review) with modern technology of electronic production and distribution. We are committed to the policy of the Budapest Open Access Initiative and, thus, avoid obsolete, costly, time-consuming, and heteronomous procedures of traditional commercial publishers. This enables an up-to-date forum for discussion in the young field of the philosophy of chemistry and brings the international community together, without discriminating scholars from financially less developed countries.

 Indexed and Abstracted

HYLE is indexed/abstracted by Philosopher's Index, Chemical Abstracts, Isis Current Bibliography, ISI Web of Knowledge (Arts & Humanities Citation Index; Science Citation Index Expanded; Social Sciences Citation Index; Current Contents Arts & Humanities; Current Contents Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences), International Bibliography of Periodical Literature (IBZ), and International Bibliography of Book Reviews of Scholarly Literature (IBR).

One of the first electronic journals in philosophy worldwide, HYLE is well connected with all major internet sites in chemistry, philosophy, history of science, and general e-journal collections and listed in all pertinent site catalogues. All papers are fully indexed by the major search engines, such as Yahoo! and Google.

Free online access to full texts ensures authors of HYLE an extraordinary large readership. With over 100,000 hits and more than 20,000 visitors per month, HYLE is one of the most widely read philosophy journals worldwide.

Publication and Distribution

HYLE is published by HYLE Publications, Karlsruhe, in cooperation with the University of Karlsruhe, Institute of Philosophy. Copyright is by the publisher and the authors.

Name and History

In response to a frequently asked question: The name of the journal derives from the Greek term for matter, ¦Ô¦Ë¦Ç, which was used in philosophy since Aristotle to grasp the principles of what we now call chemistry. (Pronounciation is similar to the English term combination 'who-lay'.)

HYLE emerged from the former print bulletin of the German working group Philosophie und Chemie, founded in Germany in 1993 by philosopher-chemists and philosophers interested in chemistry. Since 1997 HYLE has been published as an international journal, both in electronic and printed form.

In 2001 the HYLE website has moved from the University of Karlsruhe to an own domain (www.hyle.org) to secure a permanent location on the internet.

Special Services to the Scholarly Community

HYLE is more than simply a journal. As much as the internet differs from printed matter, we are permanently developing new electronic facilities as special services to the scholarly community. At the moment HYLE website provides the following currently updated free services:

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically by e-mail attachment to the editor (editor@hyle.org). The preferred text file format is Word for PC with all images embeded as low resolution JPEG files (ca. 150 dpi). Make sure that your e-mail attachment does not exceed 1MB.

The first page of the manuscript should contain the title of the paper, an abstract of 50-100 words and 4-5 keywords. Each page of the manuscript should be consecutively numbered, including pages of notes, references and captions. The title of the paper, the author's name and full affiliation address (including e-mail) are to be supplied on a separate page to ensure anonymous reviews.

Articles should preferably not exceed 10,000 words including notes and references. Divide up the text into numbered sections with instructive headings, starting with Introduction and closing with Conclusion. Unsolicited book reviews are welcome, but suitability should be discussed before with the editor; they should not exceed 1,500 words and contain complete bibliographic details including number of pages and ISBN.

Symbols and formulas should preferably be typewritten and transferable into ASCII; if that is not possible (e.g. chemical formulas) reproducible figures are required for each formula (s.b.).

Quotations should contain no punctuation marks not found in the original passage. Use double quotation marks only for real quotations with page reference, otherwise use single quotation marks.

Notes should be numbered consecutively and placed at the end of the text as endnotes, not as footnotes.

References should be listed at the end of the article in alphabetical and chronological order. A journal reference should comprise name, initials, year of publication, full title of paper, name of journal (no abbreviations), volume number, and first and last pages in the following style:

  • Nigel, D.: 1995, 'What is It Like to Be a Chemist', Journal of Philosophical Insight, 9, 432-445.

A book reference should comprise name, initials, year, full title, publisher, place of publica-tion, and page in the following style:

  • Hale, R.T: 1993, Varieties of Chemicism, Ed. Qu¨ªmica, Santiago de Chile, p. 22.
  • Newman, Y.: 1923, 'Wise old chemists', in: R.P. Oldman (ed.), The Book of Wise Women, Marker & Blow, New York, pp. 1432-1434.

In the text, references to articles or books by more than two authors should be by the first name and 'et al.', year and page (e.g., Dummy et al. 1991, p. 34); but the authors' names should all be given in the Reference section.

Figures and illustrations should be selected carefully and numbered consecutively. For accepted papers, high resolution graphic files (600 dpi) or camera ready copies on plain paper are required. Note that electronic publication requires figures to be not too detailed and not too large. Provide an instructive caption to each figure at the approximate location in the manuscript, and refer to all figures explicitly in the text.
