The background to History Today
History Today is the world’s premier, and probably the oldest, history magazine, published monthly in London since January 1951. Founded by Brendan Bracken, Minister of Information during the Second World War and proprietor of the Financial Times, it has been independently owned since 1980.
History Today publishes essays on all periods, regions and themes of history, many of them by the world¡¯s leading scholars. All are carefully edited and illustrated to make History Today a pleasurable, as well as an informative, read. You can easily explore the depth of our holdings using the search at the top pf the page. Back Issues are available and can be purchased via this site, and the text of most articles published since 1980 can be found in our online archive.
History Today also reviews large numbers of historical books, films and websites.
History Today Ltd also publishes History Review, a three-times-a-year illustrated magazine for sixth-form history students and first year undergraduates. It closely follows the A-level syllabuses, and includes material on preparation and presentation of your work, revision and study aids.
The website historytoday.com includes an archive of virtually every article published by the magazine since 1980 (somewhere over eight million words and rising), plus news from the history world, in an archive that goes back to 2001, and many other features. The online archive can be accessed either through an annual subscription, or by purchasing a selection of online articles. See the Shop for further details.
We hope you enjoy exploring the site, and reading History Today; we also look forward to hearing from you, whether to post your opinions about our articles, to comment on the product in general, or even to offer your own material for publication.
