Founded in 1938, The Historian has one of the largest circulations of any scholarly journal in the US or Britain with over 13,000 paid subscribers, both individual and institutional. The Historian seeks to publish only the finest of contemporary and relevant historical scholarship. It is the commitment of The Historian to serve as an integrator for the historical profession, bringing together the many strands of historical analysis through the publication of a diverse collection of articles.
The Historian is also committed to promoting a comprehensive understanding of current historiographical debates and the most recent scholarship on contemporary historical concerns. In addition to its renown for the publication of original articles, The Historian is noted for its extensive book review section. Running at an average of 100 pages per issue, and reflecting the general scope of the journal, this section covers a broad array of recently published scholarly monographs affording the reader an up to date survey of all fields of historical study.
As part of its commitment to diversity and scholarship, The Historian encourages submissions from all levels of the historical profession and from all regional, temporal and thematic fields of history.
Instructions to Authors The Historian welcomes manuscripts submitted by historians and students of history throughout the world. Submissions should be of interest to a wide readership not only in the fields of North American and European history, but also in African, Asian, Australian, and South American history. Manuscripts should meet the professional standards of academic journals, make a significant contribution in fact or interpretation, and use unpublished and primary sources as well as a broad range of relevant literature. Manuscripts that have been published elsewhere or that are being considered for publication elsewhere will not be considered by this editorial office.
Manuscripts should be no more than 6,000 words, exclusive of footnotes. The latter should be footnotes, not endnotes, and conform to The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition. Footnotes should be citations of quoted material rather than textual or bibliographical commentaries. Three copies of the completed manuscript, double-spaced with one-inch margins (right margin unjustified) are required for submission. The author's name should be included on title page only. Authors should also send a disk copy in IBM format plus a one hundred word summary abstract of the article. Click here for detailed style requirements.
Evaluation of manuscripts generally requires approximately four to five months, as submissions are referred anonymously to two specialists whose comments are reported by the editor to the author. We encourage inclusion of photographs, maps, and other illustrative material, which must be provided in camera-ready form, with authorization from copyright holders for these materials' reproduction in The Historian. Manuscripts are edited for organization, clarity, and consistency. Copy-edited versions will be sent to the author for approval before the finished article goes to press.
