About the journal
IAML publishes a quarterly journal called Fontes artis musicae. This journal is the principal medium of communication for the business of the Association and features articles relevant to the purposes of IAML, particularly in the area of music librarianship and documentation, bibliography and musicology. Fontes is only available to members of the Association.

Guidelines for File Submissions

Below is a list of information and instructions for the preparation of files supplied to
A-R Editions.

General Information

  • All typesetting is done in Quark Xpress 4.0 or 5.0
    • We cannot work with or use other typesetting software's files
  • Music is engraved with our proprietary software Muse
    • We can accept Finale and Sibelius files
    • We do not work with or use other engraving software files

Text

Text files should conform to the following specifications:

  • Please supply text files created in one of the following programs:
    • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0 or later
    • Microsoft Word for Macintosh, version 5.0 or later
  • **Files should be stored on CD or flash drive (or stick).**
  • Hard copy printout MUST be included with the supplied electronic files.
  • All software text files of the manuscript should conform to the following specifications:
    • Clearly labeled file names using only system extensions (.doc for Word)
    • Set the font for articles in Times Roman 10 point type
    • **All text should be double spaced for ease of setting and proofing**
    • Remove extraneous or unnecessarily repetitive codes
    • **Text punctuation should not follow the font of the preceding text, per Chicago Manual of Style 15th edition, page 241 section 6.3, unless otherwise noted in the journal's specifications.**
  • Mark elements of the text file—including but not limited to:
    • heads
    • subheads
    • paragraph indents
    • extracts
    • lists
    • tables
    • footnotes
    • glossaries
    • indexes
  • **Special symbols, characters, or diacritical marks should be coded using extended ASCII characters.**
  • Special symbols, characters, or diacritical marks should be highlighted in the manuscript.
  • Macros should be used if special or diacritic characters do not print.
  • **All consonants with diacritics should use a macro.**
  • **Please list all and illustrate each macros used in an article on a separate sheet of paper at the beginning of each article.**
    • Do not capitalize the macro names
    • List each macro only once
    • Please also list here any comments or questions you may have about the diacritics.
  • Macros should be typed between two hard brackets followed by the characters affected.
    • For example, [ring]a for
  • **Graphics should be placed in a separate file and NOT be included in the text file. Use call outs in text where charts, tables, figures, and/or examples should be placed.**

Art or Graphics

Graphics files should conform to the following specifications:
  • Submit art at size, that is 100% and conforms to the page size and print area of the journal.
  • Include both the electronic file and hard copy (for reference only).
  • Art should be in Quark Xpress, Photoshop EPS or TIFF, Adobe Illustrator EPS, or Acrobat PDF format.
    • Use the full application version; the free version downloaded from the Internet may not import into Quark Xpress
  • When fonts are part of the art image, include both screen and printer versions of fonts.
    • Fonts must be PostScript, not TrueType
  • Scans must be at 300 dpi for grayscale images and a minimum of 900 to 1200 dpi for line art.
  • **Each art file should contain only one art example. Related art examples (for example, "Ex. 4a,"   "Ex. 4b,"and "Ex. 4c" should be placed in separate files. Note: each art file should comprise a single page.**
  • Captions should be supplied with the text in a single file. They should not be included with the art.
  • If art is created in other programs, it can be submitted as CRC paper or film or a high-resolution (1200 dpi) laser copy output.

Music

Music files should conform to the following specifications:

Bringing supplied music files to spec:

  • Any edits to the music should be clear and marked in red ink or graphite.
  • Identify the version and platform of supplied files.
  • Indicate what font was used.
    • Use PostScript fonts, not True-Type fonts
    • True-Type fonts will not transfer successfully
  • Please submit a hard copy (for reference only) of each music file along with a disk.
  • For multi-page music files, include page numbers on each page.
  • Each music file should contain only one single musical example. Related musical examples (for example, "Ex. 4a,"   "Ex. 4b,"and "Ex. 4c"should be placed in separate files.
  • Please do not include captions with the music files.

Placing supplied music files:

  • Please submit a hard copy (for reference only) of each music file along with a disk.
  • Music should be saved in EPS, TIFF, or Acrobat PDF format with preview
  • Supplied scan files must be at 300 dpi for grayscale images and 900 to 1200 dpi for line art.
  • Each music file should contain only one music example. Related music examples (for example, "Ex. 4a,"   "Ex. 4b,"and "Ex. 4c" should be placed in separate files.
  • Please do not include captions with the music files.

Supplying hard copy manuscript for engraving:

  • Please submit a hard copy of each music file along with a disk.
  • Any edits to the music should be clear and marked in red ink or graphite.
  • Do not include captions with the music copy.
