About the journal
![](http://libarts.wsu.edu/english/Journals/ESQ/images/5902_cover.jpg)
ESQ is devoted to the study of nineteenth-century American literature. We invite submission of original articles, welcome work grounded in a wide range of theoretical and critical perspectives, and encourage inquiries proposing submissions and projects. A special feature is the publication of essays reviewing groups of related books on figures and topics in the field, thereby providing a forum for viewing recent scholarship in broad perspectives. Please contact editor Augusta Rohrbach with comments and queries.
Instructions to Authors
New Submissions Now Being Considered
The editors of ESQ invite submission of scholarly articles on any aspect of nineteenth-century American literature. Manuscript submissions that find their way into our journal's pages typically range from 25 to 35 pages; monographs of up to 45 pages will be considered, but authors should understand that the bar is very high. Subject matter and treatment must fully justify the extended argument, and the critical urgency of the monograph should be clearly apparent from the start; unrevised dissertation chapters, for example, are not likely to meet with success. No cover letter is required.
Electronic submissions are strongly preferred and should be provided in Rich Text or Microsoft Word format; send by email attachment to the Editors at esq@wsu.edu. Print submissions should include two copies of the typescript as well as provisions for the return of one copy, if desired; address to the Editors, ESQ, Department of English, Washington State University, Pullman, Washington 99164-5020. In aid of ESQ's commitment to double-blind review, the author's name should not appear on the essay itself. Time of report is two to four months.
Upon acceptance, contributors are asked to submit final versions that conform to The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition (you may also consult Turabian's Manual, 6th edition, chapter 9), with some exceptions covered in ESQ's House Style Sheet. A link to our house style sheet is provided below for your convenience.
