About the journal
Erkenntnis

Erkenntnis is a philosophical journal publishing papers committed in one way or another to the philosophical attitude which is signified by the label 'scientific philosophy'. It concentrates on those philosophical fields which are particularly inspired by this attitude, although other topics are welcome as well. These fields are:

- Epistemology
- Philosophy of science, foundations and methodology of science in general and of natural and human sciences such as physics, biology, psychology, economics, social sciences in particular
- Philosophy of mathematics
- Logic, philosophy of logic, and all kinds of philosophical logics
- Philosophy of language
- Ontology, metaphysics, theory of modality
- Philosophical psychology, philosophy of mind, neurophilosophy
- Practical philosophy, i.e. ethics, philosophy of action, philosophy of law, etc.

One of the objectives of Erkenntnis is the provision of a suitable platform for the discussion of controversial issues; another is the provision of timely, competent reviews of important publications in an ever-growing field of research.

In recent years, philosophers standing quite outside the pale of analytic philosophy have also paid careful, and indeed most welcome, attention to precision of concept and language, to arguments, and to well-grounded foundations. Erkenntnis provides for them, and for philosophers of all persuasions, a place of meeting, of discussion, and of disputation.

Erkenntnis was originally founded in 1930 by Rudolf Carnap and Hans Reichenbach, it was revived in 1975 by Carl G. Hempel, Wolfang Stegmüller, and Wilhelm K. Essler. You can find more information about this in the article “Hempel: The old and the new ‘Erkenntnis’” accessible in the tabs to the right.

Today, Erkenntnis is one of the leading journals in philosophy worldwide and attracts first-class authors at all stages of career; from young philosophers at the PhD level up to established academic philosophers and highly renowned senior scholars.

We pride ourselves on supplying our authors with substantial referee reports, subject to a turnaround time of about three months until the first decision. The acceptance rate for publications in the journal is presently slightly below 10%.

Instructions to Authors

Editorial procedure

Double-blind peer review

This journal follows a double-blind reviewing procedure. Authors are therefore requested to submit:
  • A blinded manuscript without any author names and affiliations in the text or on the title page. Self-identifying citations and references in the article text should be avoided.
  • A separate title page, containing title, all author names, affiliations, and the contact information of the corresponding author. Any acknowledgements, disclosures, or funding information should also be included on this page.

Online Manuscript Submission

Erkenntnis has a fully web−enabled manuscript submission and review system. This system offers authors the option of tracking in real time the review process of their manuscripts. The online manuscript and review system offers easy and straightforward log−in and submission procedures. It supports a wide range of submission file formats, including Word, WordPerfect, RTF, TXT and LaTeX for article text and TIFF, EPS, PS, GIF, JPEG and PPT for figures. PDF is not a recommended format.
Authors are requested to download the Consent to Publish and Transfer of Copyright form from this system. Please send a completed and signed form either by mail or fax to the Erkenntnis office.
NOTE: By using the online manuscript submission and review system, it is NOT necessary to submit the manuscript also as printout + disk. In case you encounter any difficulties while submitting your manuscript online, please get in touch with the responsible Editorial Assistant by clicking on ``CONTACT US' from the toolbar.
Manuscripts should be submitted to:

Electronic Figures

Electronic versions of your figures must be supplied. For vector graphics, EPS is the preferred format. For bitmapped graphics, TIFF is the preferred format. The following resolutions are optimal: line figures − 600 space− 1200 dpi; photographs − 300 dpi; screen dumps − leave as is. Colour figures can be submitted in the RGB colour system. Font−related problems can be avoided by using standard fonts such as Times Roman, Courier and Helvetica.

Colour Figures

Colour figures may be printed at the author's expense. Please indicate at submission which figures should be printed in colour, the number of colour pages you prefer and to which address we can send the invoice. In addition, please specify if figures are to appear together on a colour page.

Language

We appreciate any efforts that you make to ensure that the language is corrected before submission. This will greatly improve the legibility of your paper if English is not your first language.

Manuscript Presentation

The journal's language is English. British English or American English spelling and terminology may be used, but either one should be followed consistently throughout the article. Manuscripts should not exceed 10−15 pages of printed text, including references, tables and figures (one page of printed text equals about 400 words). Manuscripts should be printed or typewritten on A4 or US Letter bond paper, one side only, leaving adequate margins on all sides to allow reviewers' remarks. Please double−space all material, including notes and references. Quotations of more than 40 words should be set off clearly, either by indenting the left−hand margin or by using a smaller typeface. Use double quotation marks for direct quotations and single quotation marks for quotations within quotations and for words or phrases used in a special sense.
Number the pages consecutively with the first page containing:
  • running head (shortened title)
  • article type (if applicable)
  • title
  • author(s)
  • affiliation(s)
  • full address for correspondence, including telephone and fax number and e−mail address
Abstract
  • Please provide a short abstract of 100 to 250 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references.
Section Headings
  • First−, second−, third−, and fourth−order headings should be clearly distinguishable. Section headings should be numbered (e.g., 1., 1.1, 1.1.1, 2., 2.1, etc.).
Appendices
  • Supplementary material should be collected in an Appendix and placed before the Notes and Reference sections.
Notes
  • Please use endnotes only. Notes should be indicated by consecutive superscript numbers in the text and listed at the end of the article before the References. A source reference note should be indicated by an asterisk after the title. This note should be placed at the bottom of the first page.
Cross−Referencing
  • Please make optimal use of the cross−referencing features of your software package. Do not cross−reference page numbers. Cross−references should refer to, for example, section numbers, equation numbers, figure and table numbers.
In the text, a reference identified by means of an author's name should be followed by the date of the reference in parentheses and page number(s) where appropriate. When there are more than two authors, only the first author's name should be mentioned, followed by `et al.'. If numbered references are concerned, the reference
number should be enclosed within square brackets. In the event that an author cited has had two or more works published during the same year, the reference, both in the text and in the reference list, should be identified by a lower case letter like `a' and `b' after the date to distinguish the works.
  • Examples:
    Winograd (1986, p. 204)
    (Winograd, 1986a, 1986b)
(Flores et al., 1988; Winograd, 1986)
    (Bullen and Bennett, 1990)
Acknowledgements
  • Acknowledgements of people, grants, funds, etc. should be placed in a separate section before the References.

Figures
  • All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as a `Figure' and they should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). Multi−part figures ought to be labelled with lower case letters (a, b, etc.). Please insert keys and scale bars directly in the figures. Relatively small text and great variation in text sizes within figures should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size. Figures may be sized to fit approximately within the column(s) of the journal. Provide a detailed legend (without abbreviations) to each figure, refer to the figure in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Please place the legends in the manuscript after the references.
Tables
  • Each table should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). In tables, footnotes are preferable to long explanatory material in either the heading or body of the table. Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be placed immediately below the table. Please provide a caption (without abbreviations) to each table, refer to the table in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Finally, please place the tables after the figure legends in the manuscript.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by email. Corrections should be returned within three days of receipt.

Offprints

25 offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered by the corresponding author.

Page Charges and Colour Figures

No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions except for colour pages. Please see the section labelled 'Colour figures' in Manuscript Submission.

Copyright

Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article, to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.

Permissions

It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission for a quotation from unpublished material, or for all quotations in excess of 250 words in one extract or 500 words in total from any work still in copyright, and for the reprinting of figures, tables or poems from unpublished or copyrighted material.

Does Springer provide English language support?

Manuscripts that are accepted for publication will be checked by our copyeditors for spelling and formal style. This may not be sufficient if English is not your native language and substantial editing would be required. In that case, you may want to have your manuscript edited by a native speaker prior to submission. A clear and concise language will help editors and reviewers concentrate on the scientific content of your paper and thus smooth the peer review process.
The following editing service provides language editing for scientific articles in all areas Springer publishes in.
Use of an editing service is neither a requirement nor a guarantee of acceptance for publication.
Please contact the editing service directly to make arrangements for editing and payment.
