Publication history

Currently known as:

  • Journal of Contemporary Religion (1995 - current)

Formerly known as

  • Religion Today (1984 - 1994)
  • Aims and scope

Journal of Contemporary Religion is an international peer reviewed journal. Its purpose is to both document and evaluate the anthropological, sociological, psychological, and philosophical aspects of emerging manifestations of religiosity in any part of the world—whether within innovative movements or mainstream institutions. The term 'religion' in the title of this journal is understood to include contributions on spirituality. Moreover, as the journal title suggests, the focus is on contemporary issues. Therefore, the editors of Journal of Contemporary Religion welcome submissions which deal with:

    • classical topics in the study of religion, such as secularisation and the vitality of religion or traditional sectarian movements;
    • more recent developments in the study of religion, including religion and social problems, religion and the environment, religion and education, the transmission of religion, the materialisation and visualisation of religion in various forms, new forms of religious pluralism, the rise of new forms of religion and spirituality, religion and the Internet, religion and science, religion and globalisation, religion and the economy, etc.
    • theoretical approaches to the study of religion;
    • discussions of methods in relation to empirical research;
    • qualitative and quantitative research and related issues.

The Journal includes reviews of books which reflect the above themes.

    Peer Review Policy:
Research articles and Research notes published in the Journal of Contemporary Religion have undergone rigorous peer review, with at least two anonymous referees assessing the submitted material.

JCR does not have a formal procedure for the submission of book reviews. The editor approaches potential reviewers. However, informal enquiries or suggestions regarding reviews can be sent to the editor.

"The Journal of Contemporary Religion has become one of the most important and interesting journals in the academic study of religion. The excellence, currency, and multidisciplinary character of its articles has earned the journal recognition as one of preferred venues for publication, especially among the rising generation of new scholars seeking to extend the horizon of the field." - Lorne Dawson, University of Waterloo, Canada

"The Journal of Contemporary Religion has contributed significantly to putting the contemporary, the global, and the significant in the scholarly study of religion in the forefront. There are other journals that are simply about religion, and there are journals that are about specific sorts of religion or specific approaches to religion and the study of religion, but the JCR cuts across all these other categories to focus very much on the contemporary and therefore has made an enormous contribution to the idea that religion is alive, changing, never has been on the point of disappearing, and relevant. It is, in sum, a unique journal that makes a contribution no other journal concerned with religion makes." - Peter Beyer, University of Ottawa, Canada

"I’m constantly amazed at the range of material that that JCR covers. It has articles on new religious developments, new looks at established issues, religious analysis of quasi-religious settings, and undernoticed but significant religious esoterica – all from many traditions. Its reviews range even farther, covering an encyclopedic array of books. Both articles and reviews lead me down roads that I might never find on my own. JCR’s authors come from many fields and write to many issues, but the result is anything but cacophony. Instead, the editors give us an astoundingly broad intellectual conversation. I know of no other journal with such richness and such depth." - James V. Spickard, University of Redlands, California, USA

"British social scientists of religion owe a great debt to Peter Clarke for founding, and Elisabeth Arweck for managing, the Journal of Contemporary Religion. In providing a first-class outlet for descriptive and explanatory accounts of current religious phenomena, it served an obvious need. I am proud to have published in it and readily recommend it to all my colleagues." - Steve Bruce, University of Aberdeen, UK

About the journal

Journal of Contemporary Religion is an international, peer reviewed journal, publishing high-quality, original research. Please see the journal's Aims & Scope for information about its focus and peer-review policy.

Please note that this journal only publishes manuscripts in English.

Peer review

Taylor & Francis is committed to peer-review integrity and upholding the highest standards of review. Once your paper has been assessed for suitability by the editor, it will then be single blind peer-reviewed by independent, anonymous expert referees. Find out more about what to expect during peer review and read our guidance on publishing ethics.

Preparing your paper

Editor's tips

The following tips are given in the light to the common problems which submitted papers present. There are two types of tips:
A) technical guidelines
B) presentation & submission protocol
If submitting authors attend to these, their submissions should be acceptable.

A) Technical Guidelines
1) Relevance: make sure your paper falls within the remit of the Journal of Contemporary Religion. If in doubt, you can ask the editor to look at your abstract.
2) Length: keep to the recommended length for articles and research notes. If you find this absolutely impossible, consult the editor.
3) Referencing: make sure you follow the required style (Chicago author–date), both in the text and in the bibliography.
4) Anonymity:
ensure your text is ready for peer review. Place author information (names, contact details, short biography, etc.) in a separate file.
5) Language: make sure your text is free of spelling and grammatical errors. If your first language is not English, seek assistance.
6) File format: send text of paper + graphs and tables as Word files only.

B) Presentation & Submission Protocol
7) Include a covering letter or like.
8) Do not submit papers which are under consideration elsewhere or have been published before in any form or language.
9) Remember: your text should be appropriate for an international audience.
10) Treat and address the editor as you would like to be treated yourself.

Structure

Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgements; disclosure statement (see below); references; appendices (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).

Word limits

Please include a word count for your paper.
A typical manuscript for this journal should be more than 6000 and no more than 7000 words.
A typical Research Note for this journal should be more than 1000 and no more than 3500 words.

Style guidelines

Please refer to these style guidelines when preparing your paper, rather than any published articles or a sample copy.

Please use any spelling style consistently throughout your manuscript.

Please use double quotation marks for quotes, except where "a quotation is 'within' a quotation". Please note that long quotations (generally more than 30 words) should be indented without quotation marks.

Use single quotes for expressions such as: the term 'manuscript' or the word 'submission'; however, no quotes are needed for: the term niqab or the notion of dharma.

Regarding punctuation for in-text citation: if more than one statement refers to a reference, the citation is placed after the last full stop. Example: According to Frederick Leirvik, the crisis of 2008 was due to irregularities within the system. Institutions at the time did not follow correct procedure. (Leirvik 2015, 98)

If a quotation includes an emphasis, indicate whether it is in the original or not, e.g. "It is true that the authorities made a colossal mistake" (Anton 2009, 56, emphasis in original) or "Unfortunately, the result of thus action proved an utter disaster" (Clementine 2009, 106, emphasis added).

Formatting and templates

Papers (and tables) should be submitted in Word (see also below).

Figures should be saved separately from the text. To assist you in preparing your paper, we provide formatting templates (see also below).

Word templates are available for this journal. Please save the template to your hard drive, ready for use.

If you are not able to use the templates via the links (or if you have any other template queries) please contact authortemplate@tandf.co.uk

References

Please use this reference guide when preparing your paper. An EndNote output style is also available to assist you.

Checklist: what to include

  1. Author details. All authors of a manuscript should include their full name and affiliation on the cover page of the manuscript. Where available, please also include ORCIDs and social media handles (Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn). One author will need to be identified as the corresponding author, with their email address normally displayed in the article PDF (depending on the journal) and the online article. Authors' affiliations are the affiliations where the research was conducted. If any of the named co-authors moves affiliation during the peer-review process, the new affiliation can be given as a footnote. Please note that no changes to affiliation can be made after your paper is accepted. Read more on authorship.
  2. A non-structured abstract of more than 150 and no more than 200 words. Read tips on writing your abstract.

  11. Tables. Tables should present new information rather than duplicating what is in the text. Readers should be able to interpret the table without reference to the text. Please supply editable files.
  12. Equations. If you are submitting your manuscript as a Word document, please ensure that equations are editable. More information about mathematical symbols and equations.
  13. Units. Please use SI units (non-italicized).

You must obtain the necessary permission to reuse third-party material in your article (e.g. figures, photographs). The use of short extracts of text and some other types of material is usually permitted, on a limited basis, for the purposes of criticism and review without securing formal permission.
