Overview
Aims and Scope
Founded on the conviction that the disciplines of theology and philosophy have much to gain from their mutual interaction, The Heythrop Journal provides a medium of publication for scholars in each of these fields and encourages interdisciplinary comment and debate.
The Heythrop Journal embraces all the disciplines which contribute to theological and philosophical research, notably hermeneutics, exegesis, linguistics, history, religious studies, philosophy of religion, sociology, psychology, ethics and pastoral theology.
The Heythrop Journal is invaluable for scholars, teachers, students and general readers.
Each issue contains at least four substantial articles catering for a wide range of interests, with 'Notes and Comments' on issues raised by contemporary literature.
The Book Review section, a major feature of The Heythrop Journal, provides a widely-acclaimed service to authors, researchers, students, general readers, librarians and publishers.
In each volume, there is a year-end index. A complete index for the first twenty-five years was published as a supplement in 1984 and a ten-year index was published in 1995.
The Heythrop Journal was founded by Dr Bruno Brinkman. It is sponsored by the Heythrop College, University of London.

Important Points of House Style
1) The author's address should be, if possible, the academic address. The author's email address must also be supplied.
2) Subheadings: usually only one grade is employed, but two can be accommodated if necessary:
i)Grade A: Capitals; roman; not bold; consisting of either (capital Roman) numeral alone or the same numeral plus brief worded subhead; centred. ii)Grade B: Lower-case worded subhead, with or without lower-case Roman numeral; all italicized; not centred.
3) Bold type is not used anywhere in an article, apart from the title. Emphasizing italics are not to be used excessively.
4) Notes are always end notes. Short references should be included in the text of articles and not put in endnotes.
5) In the endnotes, full bibliographical details are given in the first reference to a book or article, as follows:
[book] David Pailin, Christology and Symbol (London: Tolbury Press, 1983), p. 5 [or: pp. 5-12]; or T. Fowler, `Feminist Hermeneutics' in Garth I. Harries and R. Fisher (eds.), Biblical Hermeneutics (Edinburgh: McTaigh Publications, 1977), pp. 143-61 (here pp. 123-5). [article] S. Snaith, `Augustine's Exegesis of Romans 5:12', Biblical Interpretation 21 (1991), pp. 157-83.
6) Titles of series and periodicals should not be abbreviated.
7) For subsequent references, the short title system is used, e.g. , Pailin, Christology, p. 56; Snaith, 'Augustine's Exegesis', pp. 72-5. However, 'ibid.' and 'op.cit.' ('art.cit.') may be used when the reference is immediately clear.
8) Page numbers are elided (as above).
9) Quotations: extended ones (40+ words) are displayed (with left indentation). In displayed quotations no quotation marks are used around the quotation itself.
10) Quotation marks for non-displayed quotations: single, except for quotes within quotes. Place quotation marks outside final punctuation only when the quotation forms a complete sense unit independent of the sentence in which it occurs.
11) Text indicators are placed outside final punctuation/quote marks, e.g. : '... and all we need to know.'23 ...she uses the word `eunoia'.24
12) Quoted material, translations and page references must be exact.
