About the journal

The Current Issue

Online ISSN 1477-8564 - Print ISSN 0954-6650

About the Journal

The Journal of the History of Collections is dedicated to providing the clearest insight into all aspects of collecting activity. For centuries collecting has been the pursuit of princes and apothecaries, scholars and amatuers alike. Only recently, however, has the study of collections and their collectors become the subject of great multidisciplinary interest. The range of the Journal of the History of Collections embraces the contents of collections, the processes which initiated their formation, and the circumstances of the collectors themselves. As well as publishing original papers, the Journal includes listings of forthcoming events, conferences, and reviews of relevant publications and exhibitions, making it the most comprehensive source available on a subject of increasing interest and study.

In 2012 Journal of the History of Collections will be increasing its production from 2 issues per year to 3 issues per year.

Instructions to Authors

NOTES FOR CONTRIBUTORS

IMPORTANT NOTE: Authors must clear permissions for all illustrations, where appropriate, to submit with their article. We recommend beginning this process as early as possible, to avoid delays in publication. Please see the permissions guidelines section for advice.

Preparation of manuscripts

The first page should include the title of the paper, the name of the author and an abstract of not more than 150 words which will be printed along with the text; subsequent pages should be numbered and an address for correspondence should appear at the end. Contributions should normally be in English, although material in other languages may be considered. The Editors will be glad to help with texts prepared in English by non-English-speaking contributors.

Submission of manuscripts

Contributions should be submitted electronically by clicking here All contributions will be submitted to referees and no correspondence will be entered into concerning papers which are declined.

Language Editing

Particularly if English is not your first language, before submitting your manuscript you may wish to have it edited for language. This is not a mandatory step, but may help to ensure that the academic content of your paper is fully understood by journal editors and reviewers. Language editing does not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted for publication. If you would like information about such services please click here. There are other specialist language editing companies that offer similar services and you can also use any of these. Authors are liable for all costs associated with such services.

Notes and references

These should be given sparingly, and indicated in the text by a number, either superscribed or in brackets. This number will refer to a Notes and References list at the end of the paper. Citations should conform to conventions based on the following examples:

  4. See Hammerstein, op. cit. (note 1), p. 397.

Please avoid use of ibid., idem., and loc. cit. References to works already cited should be given as in note 4 (above). Avoid all other abbreviations: the international and inter-disciplinary scope of the journal demand that all references should be immediately comprehensible to a wide readership.

If you use EndNote to facilitate referencing citations (not required for submission), this journal's style is available for use.

Illustrations

All illustrations (line drawings and photographs) should be referred to in the text and in the Figure legend as Fig. 1, etc.
Illustrations should be submitted in Adobe Photoshop compatible formats, preferably .tif, or alternatively .eps or .jpg, and saved as separate files,
not embedded in the text file.
A separate list of captions should be submitted with the text.
Colour printing will not normally be available, unless contributors are in a position to cover the extra costs involved (£350 per image).
For useful information on preparing your figures for publication, go to http://cpc.cadmus.com/da. For additional requirements on preparing electronic figures, visit: www.oxfordjournals.org/for_authors/figures.html
Photographs that are not available electronically should be glossy black-and-white prints. Each illustration should be marked on the back with the author’s name and the figure number. It will not be possible to return artwork submitted in this form.

Please note that when sending final high-resolution images to the journal, all emailed files must be 3 MB or less. If images are larger than 3 MB, please contact the journal for details regarding uploading the files on to the journal's FTP site.

Permissions

Authors will need to clear permissions for all illustrations, where appropriate, to submit with the article. We recommend beginning this process as early as possible, to avoid delays in publication.
Permission to reproduce copyright material, for print and online publication in perpetuity, must be cleared and if necessary paid for by the author; this includes applications and payments to DACS, ARS and similar licensing agencies where appropriate. Evidence in writing that such permissions have been secured from the rights-holder must be made available. Such evidence may be emailed to the journal. However, if the files are larger than 3 MB, please contact the journal for details on how to upload the files on to the journal's FTP site. It is also the author’s responsibility to include acknowledgements as stipulated by the particular institutions.

Oxford Journals can offer information and documentation to assist authors in securing print and online permissions. A template permission request letter is also available from the journal office, on request. Please see the Guidelines for Authors section.
Information on permissions contacts for a number of main galleries and museums can also be provided.
Should you require further details, please contact either the Production Editor or the Oxford Journals Rights Department on
journals.permissions@oup.com.

Copyright

Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals authors will be invited to complete an online copyright licence to publish form.

It is a condition of publication in the journal that authors grant an exclusive licence to Oxford University Press. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. As part of the licence agreement, you may however reuse your material in other publications provided that the journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication and Oxford University Press as the Publisher.

Please note that by submitting an article for publication you confirm that you are the corresponding/submitting author and that Oxford University Press ("OUP") may retain your email address for the purpose of communicating with you about the article. You agree to notify OUP immediately if your details change. If your article is accepted for publication OUP will contact you using the email address you have used in the registration process. Please note that OUP does not retain copies of rejected articles.

The Journal of the History of Collections is generally not able to offer the option of ‘gold’ open access publication of articles, due to the difficulties experienced by authors in securing image rights for open access publication. However, if your funding body or institution mandates open access publication, please do contact the editorial office (jhc.editorialoffice@oup.com) and we will be happy to discuss options for compliance.

Proofs and publication

Authors will receive proofs of their contributions in the form of pdf files, for the correction of typographical errors only. In order to minimize delays, it will be assumed that proofs not returned within seven days of issue have met with the author’s satisfaction. Authors should ensure that they retain a copy of any work submitted. Once the text has been corrected the paper will be published forthwith on the Journal’s website;
publication in hard copy will follow at the first available date. No revision of the online text is permitted and no offprints will be issued before publication of the issue in which the article appears.

Offprints

The Publisher will supply 25 offprints free of charge if the author claims them through the Oxford Journals Author Service Site. Additional offprints can also be purchased from this site. Orders from the UK will be subject to the current UK VAT charge. For orders from elsewhere in the EU you or your institution should account for VAT by way of a reverse charge.  Please provide us with your or your institution’s VAT number.
