About the journal

Planning Perspectives

Planning Perspectives  is an international peer-reviewed journal of history, planning and the environment. It offers a forum for scholars working in a wide range of disciplines interesetd in an historical approach to urbanisation and the environment, regional planning, architecture and urbanism, built form and landscape, places and people. We also aim to provide book reviews of all significant publications in the major languages. Papers of a comparative or thematic nature are welcomed. No historical period is excluded. Contributions to Planning Perspectives must report original research and will be subjected to a double-blind process of peer review.

The journal is affiliated to the International Planning History Society (IPHS), the interdisciplinary network for planning historians worldwide. In order to raise awareness of current work in the field, IPHS has its own section in the journal. It is peer-reviewed on the same basis as regular submissions, but manuscript contributions for the IPHS section are shorter, with a maximum length of 4,000 words. The IPHS editor welcomes papers on research in progress and historiographical essays, as well as personal reminiscences, accounts of archival sources or datasets, reports of conferences, symposia and seminars and announcements of relevance to society members.

Planning Perspectives is edited from University College London, Bryn Mawr College Pennsylvania, the University of South Australia and Glasgow School of Art. Prospective authors should not hesitate to get in touch with the editorial team.

Preparation

Language, length requirements and format
Papers are accepted in English. Please note that the journal uses Oxford English spelling and punctuation (e.g. colour/behaviour and familiarize/standardize).

Different word limits apply to the different parts of the journal. The main section of Planning Perspectives contains papers of up to 10,000 words, inclusive of tables, references, figure captions, footnotes and endnotes. The target word range is 8,000-10,000. The IPHS section of the journal publishes ‘research in progress’ papers of 3,000-4,000 words, as well as news and conference reports of interest to planning historians.

You can find the full style guidelines here

And full details of the referencing system here
You will need to compile your manuscript as a series of separate Word files:
  • abstract
  • title page
  • brief bio notes on contributor(s)
  • main text with author names, including
  • a. acknowledgements
  • b. endnotes
  • c. an alphabetical bibliography
  • d. appendices
  • e. a list of figures and tables and their captions
  • an anonymised version of the main text, for review
  • tables
  • figures (as TIFF, PostScript or EPS files – see below).

Figures
Tables and figures are submitted as separate files, numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (i.e. Figure 1, Figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be entered as a separate file (e.g. Figure 1(a), Figure 1(b)). Number the captions correspondingly in a list following the bibliography of the main text.
Figures from another source need to be scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour. Acceptable formats for figures are TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript). They should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Supplemental online material
Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication.

Submission

No fee is charged for submission to Planning Perspectives and there are no page charges. We do charge for colour reproduction in the print version of the journal – details on application – but colour figures online are free.

Manuscripts are submitted online at the Planning Perspectives portal http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rppe . If you haven’t used ScholarOne before you will be asked to create an account. Once logged in, you can make submissions via the Author Centre.

For the peer review process, you will be asked to upload two versions of your manuscript:
      1. one complete with author details and short, professional biographies of each author, and
      2. the other anonymized for review.

Online submission of a manuscript is straightforward, provided you have all materials ready before logging in. You can save your information in the system if you need to come back to it at a later date. You will also be asked to check the entire submission before clicking ‘submit’.

Here is what you will need:
  • an abstract of up to 200 words, to be typed or pasted into a text box;
  • between 2 - 5 keywords;
  • author details. All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal    addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses on the title page of the manuscript (this is not for review). For multi-author papers, you will need to specify who is the corresponding author and the order of co-authors. The affiliations should be where the research was conducted. If contributors move during the peer review process, the new affiliation can be given as a footnote. Changes to affiliation cannot be made once the article is accepted. Please note that the email address of the corresponding author will normally be displayed in the article PDF (depending on the journal style) and the online article.
  • Please supply all details required by any funding and grant-awarding bodies in a separate paragraph.
  • a short biographical note for each author which, when compiled in a single word document, will be uploaded separately.
In the ‘File Upload’ section, you will be asked to upload the following files, up to three at a time, with a limit of 30 MB on each upload
  • title page
  • author bio
  • main document with author names
  • main document - anonymous
  • tables
  • figures

There’s also a provision for uploading any other type of material, such as a conference report.

When you submit your paper through ScholarOne, you will be required to confirm your acceptance of the publisher guidelines on copyright terms and conditions. You can find further guidance on the submission process here
