Instructions to Authors
Prospective contributors should read these guidelines carefully and follow them as closely as possible.
Journal of Applied Philosophy is a peer reviewed journal. Accepted papers become the copyright of the Society for Applied Philosophy, unless otherwise specifically agreed. Submission of work to Journal of Applied Philosophy is taken to imply that the same manuscript has not been published, and is not under consideration, by any other journal.
Editorial correspondence, including manuscripts for submission should be sent to the Editor:
Christopher Bennett Department of Philosophy University of Sheffield Sheffield S3 7QB UK Email: jap@appliedphil.org
Articles should normally be no more than 8000 words. Articles that are sent by post can be considered only if three complete copies of each manuscript are submitted. They should be typed on one side of the paper, double-spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution. In order to facilitate blind refereeing, the author(s)'s name(s) should not be shown on the manuscript, and all identifying references to the author(s)'s own work(s) or affiliations should, if this is feasible, be masked or omitted. The name(s) of the author(s) with the title of the contribution should be included on a separate page, with the full postal address of the author who will check the proofs and receive correspondence and offprints. Please give address for publication as well if this is different. All pages should be numbered. Please include a word count.
An abstract of 150-200 words should be included. Rejected manuscripts will not normally be returned to contributors unless a self-addressed envelope and sufficient stamps/international postal coupons have been sent. Articles that conform with the above guidelines can be submitted electronically to jap@appliedphil.org but please remember to put 'paper submission' in the subject box of your email when submitting your paper electronically.
The Editors reserve the right to alter manuscripts wherever necessary to make them conform to the stylistic and bibliographical conventions of the journal.
Notes should be indicated in the text by numbering, 1, 2, 3, etc. superscript. Notes are to include references. Notes and references should then appear in one numbered list as NOTES, at the end of the article. References within the NOTES should appear in the following form:
(Book:) Martha Nussbaum, The Fragility of Goodness (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1987), pp. 32-3.
(Contribution to a collection:) J. F. Childress, 'Mandatory HIV screening and testing' in F. G. Reamer (ed.) AIDS and Ethics (New York: Columbia University Press, 1991), pp. 5-6.
(Journal article:) David Miller, 'In defence of nationality', Journal of Applied Philosophy, 10, 1 (1993): 2-25.
Subsequent references should be of the form 'Miller op. cit.'
Titles of journals should not be abbreviated.
Proofs will be sent to the authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Assistant Editor within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
Offprints. Each contributor will receive a PDF offprint of his or her article.

Guidelines for Reviewers
Book reviews form an important part of the Journal of Applied Philosophy. Indeed the Book Reviews section is the most frequently accessed part of the electronic version of the journal. We prefer reviews that critically engage with a book; but advise against blanket condemnations. For those new to reviewing, a good review is one that offers a description, analysis and appraisal of the book.
The heading of the review should follow this format: A Strange Thing Happened on the Way to the Academy C. O. JONES, 2005 Land of Nod, State University of Nod Press xix + 190 pp, £10.00 (hb) £5.99 (pb)
Your biographical details at the end of the review should follow this format: FRED BLOGGS University of Erewhon
Reviews are usually 1,200 words (maximum). Reviews should be double-spaced, with 2.5cm margins.
We do not publish a bibliography with reviews. When citing other texts, please reference these in brackets in the body of your text, following this example: …a different argument is presented by Sue Doughnim in her Philosophers and Their Strange Habits (Yawnville: Boring Books, 1990)… However, please keep these to an absolute minimum.
Use single quotation marks (‘…’) when citing text. Please provide page numbers for quotations in brackets in the body of your text; e.g. (p. 144).
