About the journal

International Studies in the Philosophy of Science

International Studies in the Philosophy of Science is a scholarly journal dedicated to publishing original research in philosophy of science and in philosophically informed history and sociology of science. Its scope includes the foundations and methodology of the natural, social, and human sciences, philosophical implications of particular scientific theories, and broader philosophical reflection on science. The editors invite contributions not only from philosophers, historians, and sociologists of science, but also from researchers in the sciences. The journal publishes articles from a wide variety of countries and philosophical traditions. The editors encourage participation in the annual Philosophy of Science conference at the Inter-University Centre, Dubrovnik, a forum for high-quality research and international debate in philosophy of science.

Instructions to Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors. ***

Manuscripts, which have been suitably prepared for blind refereeing, should be sent to the Editor: James W. McAllister, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Leiden, Matthias de Vrieshof 4, P.O Box 9515, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands. Email: j.w.mcallister@let.leidenuniv.nl . Articles, which should not be more than 8000 words, can be considered only if three complete copies of each manuscript are submitted. They should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution and name(s) of the author(s). The full postal address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered. Those uncertain about the standard of their English should ask a fluent English speaker in their home country to check the text before submitting it to the journal; the editors reserve the right to make any necessary further corrections to the English manuscripts accepted for publication.

An abstract of 150-200 words should be included together with a brief note on the contributor.

Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

Rejected manuscripts will not normally be returned to contributors unless a self-addressed envelope and sufficient stamps/international postal coupons have been sent.

Electronic Submissions. Authors should send the final, revised version of their articles in both hard copy paper and electronic disk forms. It is essential that the hard copy (paper) version exactly matches the material on disk. Please print out the hard copy from the disk you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final version with the disk to the journal's editorial office. Save all files on a standard 3.5 inch high-density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word in a PC format, but can translate from most other common word processing programs as well as Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only".
If your article is accepted by the journal, you will be asked to complete this form and send it to the editor with your revised or final version.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction.

References should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name, with the year of publication in parentheses. If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper, in Chicago author-date style. Please see

http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/style/reference/tf_ChicagoAD.pdf

Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Editor within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.

Free article access : Corresponding authors receive free online access to their article through our website and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Additional reprints can be ordered through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk

Copyright. It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Inter-University Foundations. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/copyright.asp .

As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source).
