About the journal

Symbolae Osloenses was first published in 1922 under the title Symbolae Arctoae . Its present title was established in 1924 (Vol.II), with the new subtitle added in 1997.

Beginning with Volume LXXII, 1997, Symbolae Osloenses has regularly included a debate section with a major article by a leading scholar, followed by short comments by other scholars. In addition to original articles, the journal also contains review articles, Forschungsberichte, and information on classical studies in Norway.

In principle, the serial covers all branches of classical research (including the Middle Ages and the Renaissance). Contributions are written in English, occasionally in German, French or Italian. New papyri from the Oslo collection are regularly published in the serial.

Indexed/abstracted in:

Bolletino Classico; Gnomon; L’Année philologique; MLA International Bibliography of Books and Articles on the Modern Languages and Literatures (Complete Edition); Norske Tidsskriftartikler; Thomson Reuters Arts & Humanities Citation Index

Instructions to Authors
The instructions below are specifically directed at authors who wish to submit a manuscript to Symbolae Osloenses . For general information, please visit the Author Services section of our website.

Symbolae Osloenses considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Symbolae Osloenses , that they have not been published already and are not under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Symbolae Osloenses incurs and their papers will not be published.
Contributions to Symbolae Osloenses must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office.

Manuscript preparation

General guidelines
  • Papers are accepted in English, German and French. The author is responsible for checking the language before submitting their paper for consideration.
  • Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendixes (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).
  • Abstracts of a maximum of 150 words are required for all papers submitted.
  • Each paper should have 1-5 keywords. Please note that these keywords are meant for indexing in online search engines.
  • All authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.
  • Manuscript files should be submitted electronically via e-mail. Address details below.

Detailed style guidelines
Symbolae Osloenses uses the Chicago Author-Date style of references, and authors are asked to edit their list of references according to this style before submitting their paper for consideration. For more detailed guidance, please use our style guide linked below.

Figures
If illustrations are provided with the manuscript file, please adhere to the following guidelines:
It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, and 600 dpi for greyscale relative to the printed size of the image.
  • Figures must be saved as separate image files.
  • Files should be saved in one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), high quality JPEG (95%), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application.
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
  • Authors of accepted papers who would like to publish their figures in colour in the print version should consult Taylor & Francis at proof stage to agree upon the financial contribution for colour reproduction. Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal can still appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied. Black-and-white images are reproduced free of charge.
Reproduction of copyright material
As an author, you are required to secure permission to reproduce any proprietary text, illustration, table, or other material, including data, audio, video, film stills, and screenshots, and any supplementary material you propose to submit. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). The reproduction of short extracts of text, excluding poetry and song lyrics, for the purposes of criticism may be possible without formal permission on the basis that the quotation is reproduced accurately and full attribution is given.
