About the journal

With spring rapidly approaching, many of our younger readers will be starting to think about a future career in dance. This month, we begin a new three-part series by Sheila Cross, examining the various dance options on offer at UK universities. For professional dancers, Amanda Gillespie offers advice on visa requirements for working in the US and Debbie Malina explains the health benefits of the Rolfing technique. We also celebrate Scottish Ballet's 40th anniversary with a sneak preview of the company's new home at Glasgow's Tramway.
Last month, we marked the 70th birthday of former Royal Ballet ballerina Dame Antoinette Sibley, and it seems entirely fitting that this month we pay tribute to her remarkable colleague, the great Lynn Seymour, who celebrates her 70th birthday this month. Almost certainly the most incredible performer I have ever encountered, Seymour's appearances in Mayerling, Anastasia and Onegin are among my most precious ballet memories. She talks with typically forthright candour to Gerald Dowler. Another wonderful former ballerina, Fiona Chadwick, discusses her life with Patricia Linton as part of our popular Dancers after Dancing series.
Finally, don't forget the MOVE IT dance exhibition is being held at London's Olympia this month, from March 6-8. Come along and meet the Dancing Times team at Stand 716!

The best news for many a long and hot day is that the Council for Dance and Education and Training (CDET) is planning to introduce a nationwide scheme to monitor thousands of unregulated dance and musical theatre schools for the under-16s, offering evening, weekend and summer schools in the UK, to tackle the problem of unqualified tutors and staff. The CDET, and this magazine, receive very many inquiries from parents anxious for assurance that their children are being properly taught and looked after, who have no way of knowing, from promotional material, the exact status of certain schools. The achievements of the Dance and Drama Awards have now been published in a Review (see page 25) but these relate only to the 16-plus age group and are still very limited in their number and scope. Sixteen plus is a good watermark for well trained students going on to vocational schools, especially for contemporary dance and musical theatre, but for classical ballet assessment needs to be done at a much earlier age. It must be recognised that bad, and sometimes dangerous, training can be inflicted on young bodies from the very beginning of their ballet training by unqualified and unscrupulous teachers. In September, the CDET will introduce a new kitemark for under-16 training. It will be the first for the pre-vocational sector and is intended to give parents assurance about the standards of such schools. The scheme will look into such matters as health and safety precautions, proper dance flooring, public liability insurance and access to proper medical care in addition, of course, to qualified teachers who have undergone Criminal Records Bureau checks. It is a move, which we welcome whole-heartedly and look forward to being able to give this guidance to sometimes bewildered parents.
