Journal of Chinese Cinemas is a major refereed academic publication devoted to the study of Chinese film, drawing on the recent world-wide growth of interest in Chinese cinemas. An incredibly diverse range of films has emerged from all parts of the Chinese-speaking world over the last few years, with an ever increasing number of border-crossing collaborative efforts prominent among them. These exciting developments provide abundant ground for academic research.

We would like to invite contributions to the Journal of Chinese Cinemas, the only English-language, refereed academic journal devoted solely to the study of Chinese film. Launched in 2007, the Journal is growing from strength to strength, and now invites high quality submissions on any aspect of Chinese cinemas, including not only films from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Chinese diaspora, but also articles exploring cross-cultural flows between Chinese cinemas and other world cinemas. Some suggested topics of interest are:

  • Rethinking “popular” and/or “mass” cinema
  • New development and historical milestones in Chinese film theory
  • Films focusing on climate change, ecological concerns and migration (both internal and transnational)
Submissions should be:

Full Articles (6000-8000 words) based on original work of research which are clearly and thoroughly presented and argued.

In the first instance, manuscripts should be submitted as Word documents by email attachment to the Editor, Song Hwee Lim, at s.h.lim@exeter.ac.uk or the Associate Editor, Julian Ward, at julian.ward@ed.ac.uk.
