About the journal
Published in February, May, August, and November, The Journal of Asian Studies (JAS) has long been recognized as the most authoritative and prestigious publication in the field of Asian studies.
This quarterly has been published regularly since 1941, offering Asianists a wealth of information unavailable elsewhere.
JAS publishes the very best empirical and multidisciplinary work on Asia, spanning the arts, history, literature, the social sciences, and cultural studies. Experts around the world turn to this quarterly journal for the latest in-depth scholarship on Asia’s past and present, for its extensive book reviews, and for its state-of-the-field essays on established and emerging topics. With coverage reaching from South and Southeast Asia to China, Inner Asia, and Northeast Asia, JAS welcomes broad comparative and transnational studies as well as essays emanating from fine-grained historical, cultural, political, or literary research and interpretation. The JAS also publishes clusters of papers representing new and vibrant discussions on specific themes and issues.
All current AAS members receive the print and online Journal of Asian Studies as a benefit of membership. |

Instructions to Authors
AAS is delighted to announce its partnership with Cambridge University Press to publish The Journal of Asian Studies (JAS). The February 2007 issue of the Journal of Asian Studies (Volume 66:1) was the first to be published under the Cambridge imprint—and the first to be published simultaneously in an online format offering full-text PDF and HTML articles.
AAS members now have the benefit of accessing JAS online. To access online content, you must be a current AAS member and login.
In addition to the many advantages inherent to the online JAS—fully searchable tables of contents and abstracts, ease of downloading and printing of articles and citations, etc.—the online JAS will allow access to JAS multimedia supplements—video, music, and digital images can easily be uploaded and linked to relevant articles.
Our partnership with Cambridge University Press is a most promising development for JAS and for our Association. We especially look forward to seeing JAS reach more of our colleagues and libraries in Asia. This expanded reach will bring us more readers and contributors, and should lead scholars from around the world to join our Association as members.

Manuscripts of 8,000 to 10,000 words and any accompanying figures should be submitted electronically through the Editorial Manager online submission system (http://www.editorialmanager.com/jas/). Low-resolution images and illustrations are acceptable for the review process; all images, tables and figures should include titles or captions. Please note that in the event of publication, the author is responsible for acquiring high-resolution images along with permission to publish them.
Inquiries may be directed to the Editor at jas@journalofasianstudies.org or by phone: (949) 824-6521. Due to the volume of submissions, we cannot evaluate proposed abstracts or titles, only full submissions.
Please send all books for review to the AAS Secretariat in Ann Arbor, Michigan. See Contact Information: Books for Review below.
Read First: the editor's "JAS Rules of Thumb" for guidance on manuscript preparation.
When preparing a manuscript, please note that JAS is committed to publishing articles based on in-depth, original research. Authors should also take care to address the interests of our broad, multidisciplinary readership by raising larger questions of interest that reach beyond their precise research specialties. Authors are encouraged to consult recent issues of JAS for guidance on style and formatting.
Manuscripts submitted to JAS should not have been published elsewhere and should not be under review for publication elsewhere.
- Article manuscripts, including notes and references, should range between 8,000 and 10,000 words, or approximately thirty-five pages in length, and must include a 150-word abstract at the beginning of the document.
- Authors’ names must be left off of the manuscript, as JAS engages in double-blind reviews.
- Manuscripts must be double-spaced with 12-point type and 1 inch margins including extracts, notes, and references, and formatted for letter-size (8.5 x 11 in.) paper if possible.
- Notes should be as few as possible and appear at the end of the text.
- Use parenthetical in-text citation, and author-date formatting for references per section 15 of the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010).
- Please use the following Romanization: Chinese: Pinyin; Japanese: Hepburn; Korean: McCune-Reischauer.
Articles in JAS represent neither the views of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) nor those of the JAS editors. The Editor is responsible for the final selection of content of JAS and reserves the right to reject any material deemed inappropriate for publication. Responsibility for opinions expressed and the accuracy of facts published in articles and reviews rests solely with the individual authors. |
