About the journal
Ben Jonson Journal

The Ben Jonson Journal is a twice-a-year review devoted to the study of Ben Jonson and the culture in which his manifold literary efforts thrived. It includes essays on poetry, theatre, criticism, religion, law, the court, the curriculum, medicine, commerce, the city, and family life.

The journal is also concerned with the manifestation of these and other interests in Renaissance life and culture generally and so contains material not only concerning Jonson specifically but of significance to the age in which he lived.

Ben Jonson Journal is ranked "A" in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2010 Ranked Journal List, putting it in the top 25% of journals in its field.

Beginning in 2014, the Ben Jonson Journal will make three literary awards for best essays in each year's volume: 1) One $1,000 'Beverly Rogers Literary Award'; and 2) Two $500 'Ben Jonson Discoveries Awards'. Articles to be considered for these awards are accepted on an ongoing basis. Contributors are welcome to seek further information from the editors at the following email: joyceahn@earthlink.net

Submission Guidelines
Suggested length of articles is 6,000–7,000 words, including endnotes. Suggested length of notes is up to 5,000 words, including endnotes. The typescript should be double-spaced throughout, including offset quotations and endnotes, in 12 point type. Quotation marks should be double, single for quotes in quotes: for example, “xxxx ‘yyyy’ xxxxx.” We use US spelling and punctuation. All submissions should be formatted according to the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

Bibliographic documentation
All bibliographic documentation should be cited according to the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. To give some of the most important examples: use endnotes, not footnotes or parenthetical citation (but see below for some exceptions); italicize titles of published works, not underline them; and use arabic numerals, not roman (e.g. 5.2.15–20 for lines 15–20 that appear in act 5, scene 2). Endnote citation should include all of the necessary bibliographic information. Second and subsequent citations of the same work should appear in short form. Some common examples are provided below.

Authored book
Ann Barton, Ben Jonson, Dramatist (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1984), 11¬–12.
[Short citation: Barton, 11–12.]

Edited texts
Ben Jonson, ed. C. H. Herford and Percy and Evelyn Simpson, 11 vols. (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1925–52), 8:102.
Stephen Orgel and Roy C. Strong, eds., Inigo Jones: The Theatre of the Stuart Court, 2 vols. (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1973), 1:283.

Journal article
Ian Donaldson, “Perishing and Surviving: The Poetry of Donne and Jonson,” Essays in Criticism 51.1 (2001): 70–72.

Frequent reference to a single source
If your paper uses frequent quotations from a single source, it usually makes sense to cite them in text parenthetically. The full citation should be given in an endnote at first mention, followed by such wording as “hereafter cited in text.”

Scripture references
Usually cited in text, e.g. (Gen 25:19-36:43), (Heb 13:8), (Mt 26:2–5)
