Instructions to Authors

Subject Matter

TDR is about performance in any of its many aspects: theatre, dance, music, film, video, rituals, play, sports, performance in everyday life. We publish accounts of particular performances, theoretical articles that draw on many different kinds of performances, articles on the works of individual artists, performance and book criticism, ethnographic accounts, polemics, and manifestos. We are actively intercultural, interdisciplinary, and progressive; we favor writing about experimental performances, performances with political or social relevance, and performance from various parts of the world. We are not interested in drama as such-the analysis of play texts with no reference to their actual life in performance. The best way to measure the scope of TDR is to look at recent issues.

Submission Methods

Please note that we only accept original work that has not been previously published in English in any media.

Email
TDR prefers electronic submissions. Please put your email address on the first page under the author's name and please attach your article and abstract to an email to
tdr@nyu.edu, following the same formatting guidelines as those for submitting via disk. In the body of the email, please be sure to include your contact information: address(es), phone number(s), fax number, and email address.

Disk
If you prefer to submit your article non-electronically, you may send a disk and hard copy to TDR. All submissions should follow TDR format guidelines (see Manuscript below). Please send your article on a 3.5” diskette or a CD for PC, preferably in at least Microsoft Word ‘97 for PC, with software and author name on label. With your hard copy, please include a cover sheet with your address(es), phone number(s), fax number, email address. If you submit a typed manuscript, it will not be returned unless you include an SASE. *If you are submitting materials to supplement the online version of TDR (i.e. video clips, etc.), please contact our office for multimedia guidelines.

Submission Format

Send as much art as you can so that we can make a selection. Artwork will be returned after publication.

Artwork Captions
Fully caption and credit all artwork. Captions should include title, date, and venues; names of performers,
directors, authors; and photographer or photo credit. They may also include a brief description or comment, for example:

        1. Left to right: Shirley Cheecho, Alejandro Ronceria, Gloria Miguel in Son of Ayash (1991) by Jim Morris,
directed by Raoul Trujillo at the Native Canadian Centre. (Photo by Greg Staats)

    Images
Duplicate all artwork before sending. We accept high-contrast glossy photos, slides, video grabs, and/or
camera-ready graphics with your article. We also accept videos for possible use online (please request a copy of our
multimedia guidelines). Duplicate slides before sending. Retain photo negatives. Do not send images in Microsoft Word
    or Powerpoint.

Images scanned to a Zip Disk
When scanning images, set scan as large as possible. Scan color images twice, once in color and once in black and white.
Photos should have a minimum of 266 dpi. Line art should have between 800 and 1200 dpi. Save files as .tiff files,
or if necessary, .jpeg files. Be sure to send hard copies of the scanned image along with the disk.

Manuscript Style Guidelines

Commas: Use serial commas before "and": apples, oranges, and grapes.

Dashes: Use computer-generated N and M dashes if possible. Otherwise use two hyphens for N dashes, three hyphens for M dashes.

Dates: Day month year (no commas): 1 September 1992. Spell out months: January 1984. Decades: In the 1960s; the '60s; 20th century.

Ellipses: Bracket ellipses that indicate author's or editor's deletion: [...]

Endnotes: Use computer-generated endnotes only (no footnotes). Place before References.

Font: Courier (or Courier New), 12 pt

Gender and Ethnicity: We do not use masculine pronouns as universal; avoid "s/he" and "he" or "she"; use gender-neutral nouns. Ethnicity as per Chicago Manual of Style, 14th ed., p. 246, section 7.33. Unless you specify otherwise, we will edit accordingly.

Interviews: The last name of the speaker in all caps followed by a colon: JONES: I said. . .

Italics: Use computer-generated italics, no underlines (see Titles).

Margins: 1" on all sides with a .5" header and footer.

Non-English Words and Proper Names: Italicize non-English words on first use only. We rely on authors for accurate use of diacriticals; they must be computer-generated. For non-English language productions, give the title of the production first, then parenthetically in English: Maitu Njugira (Mother Sing for Me, 1981).

Numbers: Spell out numbers from one to ten. Use numerals for numbers 11 and higher.

References and citations: Place references after endnotes, at the end of document. Please do not put references in endnotes. Reference according to the author-date system in the 14th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. For citations within the text, see p. 645, section 16.3: (Miller 1993:143-45) or (Miller 1993) or (see Miller 1993). All references must be cited in the text.
