French History offers an important international forum for everyone interested in the latest research in the subject. It provides a broad perspective on contemporary debates from an international range of scholars, and covers the entire chronological range of French history from the early Middle Ages to the twentieth century. French History includes articles covering a wide range of enquiry across the arts and social sciences, as well as across historical periods, and a book reviews section that is essential reference for any serious student of French history. One recent subscriber commented: "the book reviews alone make it worth the price!".
Instructions to Authors
1 SUBMISSION
Articles will normally be of 8-10,000 words, but longer ones may be allowed in exceptional cases. They may be submitted in either English or French (though the published article will be translated into English). Papers should be submitted electronically via the online submission website. Any editorial or submission queries should be sent to the Editor.
The Editor will notify authors as soon as possible on the acceptability of their papers and inform them of any changes that need to be made, but will not enter into correspondence about papers considered unsuitable for publication.

Neither the Editor nor the publisher accepts responsibility for the views of authors expressed in their contributions. Authors may not submit manuscripts that are under consideration for publication elsewhere.
2 LAYOUT.
Articles should be in Word and double-spaced with an unjustified right-hand margin. Each page should be numbered.
Authors are asked to consider the broad readership of French History as they prepare their material for submission. In particular, they are encouraged to draft the openings of articles and review articles in such a way as to make their material accessible to readers who may not be specialists in their own field.
Footnotes In articles, and review articles, footnotes should be numbered consecutively and placed together in double-spaced typing on a separate page or pages at the end, though they will be published at the foot of each page. In reviews of books, there should be no footnotes, all material being incorporated in the text.
Author affiliation In articles and review articles, the author's name should appear at the beginning, immediately under the title of the piece. An asterisked footnote should be included, giving the author's present position, and an address sufficient for him/her to be contacted by readers, and (if so desired) brief acknowledgements. Degrees and other personal details should not be included.
Abstract Authors should also submit a 150-word abstract of their article. This will appear at the head of the text and will serve to alert potential readers to the article on the journal's website.
Quotations and References Quotation marks should be single and not double unless they indicate a quotation within a quotation. In reviews of books, the author's name should appear at the end on the right, with his/her institution on the left. Page references are entered with [p.] inserted before them for citations from books, but not for articles. The journal’s house style does not include titled sub-sections, although sections may be marked with roman numerals.
For further matters of style and layout, authors are strongly encouraged to study recent articles from French History.
3 LANGUAGE EDITING
Particularly if English is not your first language, before submitting your manuscript you may wish to have it edited for language. This is not a mandatory step, but may help to ensure that the academic content of your paper is fully understood by journal editors and reviewers. Language editing does not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted for publication. If you would like information about one such service please click here. There are other specialist language editing companies that offer similar services and you can also use any of these. Authors are liable for all costs associated with such services.

COPYRIGHT AND PERMISSIONS
New for 2010 – Please note that French History now encourages authors to complete their copyright licence to publish form online
It is the author's responsibility to obtain print and online permission to quote material (text and images) from third party sources and to cover any costs incurred in securing these rights. The Editor should be alerted at the earliest opportunity as to any difficulty in securing these third party rights.
