About the journal

Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy: A European Journal is the official journal of the European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Health Care. It is a forum for international exchange of research data, theories, reports and opinions in the discipline of bioethics, and the philosophy of medicine and health care in general. The aim of this journal is to promote interdisciplinary studies, as well as to stimulate international exchange. Particular attention will be paid to developing contributions from all European countries, and to making accessible scientific work and reports on the practice of health care ethics, from all nations, cultures and language areas in Europe.

The journal welcomes contributions from history, ethics, anthropology, epistemology, logic, metaphysics, philosophy of science and technology, sociology and political science, law, and the philosophy of culture and religion. These fields have a common object of reflection, viz. health care, which is the human effort to deal (theoretically and practically) with experiences of disease, illness, death as well as health, well-being and life.

Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy

Online Manuscript Submission

Springer now offers authors, editors and reviewers of Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy the option of using our fully web-enabled online manuscript submission and review system. To keep the review time as short as possible (no postal delays!), we encourage authors to submit manuscripts online to the journal‘s editorial office. Our online manuscript submission and review system offers authors the option to track the progress of the review process of manuscripts in real time. Manuscripts should be submitted to: http://mhep.edmgr.com

The online manuscript submission and review system for Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy offers easy and straightforward log-in and submission procedures. This system supports a wide range of submission file formats: for manuscripts - Word, WordPerfect, RTF, TXT and LaTex; for figures - TIFF, GIF, JPEG, EPS, PPT, and Postscript.

NOTE: By using the online manuscript submission and review system, it is NOT necessary to submit the manuscript also in printout + disk.

In case you encounter any difficulties while submitting your manuscript on line, please get in touch with the responsible Editorial Assistant by clicking on “CONTACT US” from the tool bar.

For submission in LaTeX, Springer have developed a Springer LaTeX class file, which can be downloaded from: http://www.springer.com/authors/jrnlstylefiles

Use of this class file is highly recommended. Do not use versions downloaded from other sites. Technical support is available at: texhelp@springer.com. If you are not familiar with TeX/LaTeX, the class file will be of no use to you. In that case, submit your article in a common word processor format.

Electronic figures

Electronic versions of your figures must be supplied. For vector graphics, EPS is the preferred format. For bitmapped graphics, TIFF is the preferred format. The following resolutions are optimal: line figures - 600 - 1200 dpi; photographs - 300 dpi; screen dumps - leave as is. Colour figures can be submitted in the RGB colour system. Font-related problems can be avoided by using standard fonts

such as Times Roman, Courier and Helvetica.

Colour figures

Springer offers two options for reproducing colour illustrations in your article. Please let us know what you prefer: 1) Free online colour. The colour figure will only appear in colour on www.springer.com and not in the printed version of the journal. 2) Online and printed colour. The colour figures will appear in colour on our website and in the printed version of the journal. The charges are EUR 950/USD 1150 per article.

Language

We appreciate any efforts that you make to ensure that the language is corrected before submission. This will greatly improve the legibility of your paper if English is not your first language.

Reviewing Procedure

Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy follows a double−blind reviewing procedure. Each submitted manuscript will be reviewed by two anonymous peer rewiewers. Authors are therefore requested to place their name and affiliation on a separate page. Self−identifying citations and references in the article text should either be avoided or left blank when manuscripts are first submitted. Authors are responsible for reinserting self−identifying citations and references when manuscripts are prepared for final submission.

Ethics

When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional or regional) or with the Helsinki Declaration (1964, amended in 1975 and 1983) of the World Medical Association. Do not use patients‘ names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in any illustrative material. When reporting experiments on animals, indicate whether the institution‘s or the National Research Council‘s guide for, or any national law on, the care and use of laboratory animals was followed.

Manuscripts Presentation

The journal‘s language is English. British English or American English spelling and terminology may be used, but either one should be followed consistently throughout the article. Leave adequate margins on all sides to allow reviewers‘ remarks. Please double−space all material, including notes and references. Quotations of more than 40 words should be set off clearly, either by indenting the left−hand margin or by using a smaller typeface. Use double quotation marks for direct quotations and single quotation marks for quotations within quotations and for words or phrases used in a special sense.

Number the pages consecutively with the first page containing:

running head (shortened title)

article type

title

author(s)

affiliation(s)

full address for correspondence, including telephone and fax number and e−mail address

Article Types

The journal welcomes manuscripts in the following areas of interest:

Scientific Contributions (10 to 30 pages): Original articles with a longer and argued exposition of problems, topics or problem areas. These should include an abstract and key words.

Practical Viewpoints (5 to 15 pages): Short communications, e.g. case discussions, clinical problem, current issues. Research and Educational Programs (5 to 15 pages): Special surveys and articles on programs and courses in ethics and philosophy, education, or exposition of research programmes and results from various centers, departments and institutions.

Review Articles (1 to 5 pages): Analyses and critical reviews of important recent publications in the area of philosophy of health care.

Short Literature Notices (1 to 2 pages): Summary reviews of recently published books and reports. The section will especially focus on reporting about literature in non−English languages, in order to enhance public knowledge of word not easily accessible. Letters to the Editor (1 to 4 pages): Responses from readers to publications. In principle, authors will be invited to react upon responses of readers of their publications.

Abstract and Key Words

Please provide a short abstract of 100 to 250 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references. Please provide 5 to 10 key words or short phrases in alphabetical order. Since the abstract and the key words will be used to select appropriate rewiewers, it is essential to make them as informative as possible.

Abbreviations

Abbreviations should be explained at first occurrence.

Section Headings

First−, second−, third−, and fourth−order headings should be clearly distinguishable.

Appendices

Supplementary material should be collected in an Appendix which comes before the Notes and Reference sections.

Notes

Please use endnotes only. Bibliographic information should be listed in a separate Reference section (see ‘References‘ section for more information). Notes should be indicated by consecutive superscript numbers in the text and collected at the end of the article before the references. A source reference note should be indicated by an asterisk after the title. This note should be placed at the bottom of the first page.

Cross−Referencing

Please make optimal use of the cross−referencing features of your software package. Do not cross−reference page numbers. Cross−references should refer to:

the number of a displayed equation

the number of a table

the number of a figure

the number of an enunciation

the name / year of a reference entry

In the text, a reference identified by means of an author‘s name should be followed by the date of the reference in parentheses and page number(s) where appropriate. When there are more than two authors, only the first author‘s name should be mentioned, followed by ‘et al.‘. In the event that the author cited has had two or more works published during the same year, the citation and the reference should contain a lower case letter like a and b after the date to distinguish the works.

Examples:

Winograd (1986, p. 204)

(Winograd, 1986a)

(Winograd, 1986b)

(Winograd, 1986; Flores et al., 1988)

(Bullen and Bennett, 1990)

Acknowledgements

Acknowledgements of people, grants, funds, etc. should be placed in a separate section before the References.

References

References to books, journal articles, articles in collections and conference or workshop proceedings, and technical reports should be collected in a list at the end of the paper and listed in alphabetical order following the style below. Articles in preparation or articles submitted for publication, unpublished observations, personal communications, etc. should not be included in the Reference list but should only be mentioned in the article text (e.g., T. Moore, personal communication).

References to books should include the author‘s name; year of publication; title in full, underlined or in italics; place of publication; publisher; page numbers where appropriate. For example:

Figures

All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as a 'Figure' and they should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). Multi-part figures ought to be labelled with lower case letters (a, b, etc.). Please insert keys and scale bars directly in the figures. Relatively small text and great variation in text sizes within figures should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size. Figures may be sized to fit approximately within the column(s) of the journal. Provide a detailed legend (without abbreviations) to each figure, refer to the figure in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Please place the legends in the manuscript after the references.

Tables

Each table should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). In tables, footnotes are preferable to long explanatory material in either the heading or body of the table. Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be placed immediately below the table. Please provide a caption (without abbreviations) to each table, refer to the table in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Finally, please place the tables after the figure legends in the manuscript.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by email. Corrections should be returned within three days of receipt.

Offprints

Twenty−five offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered by the corresponding author.

Page Charges and Colour Illustrations

No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions except for colour pages. The author will be contacted regarding costs and invoicing if the manuscript includes colour figures.

Copyright

Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.

Permissions

It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission for a quotation from unpublished material, or for all quotations in excess of 250 words in one extract or 500 words in total from any work still in copyright, and for the reprinting of illustrations or tables or poems from unpublished or copyrighted material.

Springer Open Choice

In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription−based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springers online platform SpringerLink. To publish via Springer Open Choice, upon acceptance please click on the link below to complete the relevant order form and provide the required payment information. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will publish as regular subscription−model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.
