About the journal

The Journal of British Cinema and Television has rapidly established itself as indispensable for anyone seriously interested in British cinema and television, and is now the prime site for publishing cutting-edge work in these fields.

Themed issues alternate with unthemed issues, and future themes will include colour, screenwriting, the representation of London, and British film and television in the first decade of the new century.

Each issue contains:

* A wide range of papers

* Substantial book reviews

* A section intended to stimulate on-going debate about the study of British cinema and television

* Interviews with leading practitioners

* Reports of conferences and other relevant events

* Reviews of soundtracks of British films and television programmes released on CD

Instructions to Authors

This Journal is the prime site for those wishing to publish cutting-edge work on British cinema and television, and the editorial board welcomes contributions on any aspect of these areas. The Journal is published twice yearly, with fully themed issues alternating with non-themed ones. Themes of future issues are announced in each issue of the Journal.

Articles submitted for publication should be printed double spaced and in 12 pt type on one side only of white A4 paper, and should include an abstract of 250 words and a list of up to ten keywords. Generous margin space should be available on both left and right hand sides of each page, and all pages must be numbered. Two hard copies of the paper should be submitted, along with a Word document either on disk or as an e-mail attachment. A separate cover sheet should be provided giving brief biographical details of the author(s), including postal and e-mail addresses as well as telephone and fax numbers. Please attach to every submission a letter confirming that all authors involved have agreed to the submission and that the article is not currently being considered for publication by any other journal. All submissions will be reviewed by two anonymous referees, as well as by the issue editors.

As a rule, articles should contain not less than 5000 words, but should not exceed 8000, including notes and references in both instances. It is intended that each issue should include at least one interview with a significant figure in British cinema and/or television, and interviews may be submitted in either straightforward Q and A form or in a more discursive fashion. The former, however, will need to be prefaced by a critical introduction.

References should conform to the Harvard style. In other words, quotations cited in the text should be indicated thus: Higson (1995: 84), whilst more general references should be indicated thus: Higson (1995). References should be listed alphabetically and in full at the end of the paper; where more than one work by the same author is cited, the least recent work should be listed first.

Please use the following standard format:

For books: Higson, Andrew (1995), Waving the Flag: Constructing a National Cinema in Britain, Oxford: Oxford University Press.

For articles: Ellis, John (1981), 'Victory of the voice', Screen, 22: 2, pp. 69-72.

For chapters in books: Monk, Claire (2001), ' Sexuality and heritage', in Vincendeau, Ginette (ed.), Film/Literature/Heritage, London: British Film Institute, pp. 6-11.

In more general terms, use single quotation marks for quotations of less than 40 words, with double marks for any quotation within a quotation; all quotations over 40 words in length should be indented.

British spelling should be used throughout.

Foreign words (except proper names) should be italicised. Dates should be in the style of 9 November 1996, the 1960s and 1989-91.

Spell out numbers from one to nineteen; use numerals for 20 and over.

Initials of institutions should be without full stops (BFI, NFT), as should Dr, Mr, Mrs and so on, but people's initials with them (G.B.S., J.F.K.).

If in doubt, use any article published in a previous issue of the Journal as guidance, or ask the principal editor for a copy of the Journal style guide.

It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission for reproducing any previously published materials such as stills or posters.

Contributions should be sent to Professor Julian Petley, School of Arts, Brunel University, Uxbridge UB8 3PH. E-mail:
