About the journal

Academy of East Asian Studies

The Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies (SJEAS), published since the year 2001 by Academy of East Asian Studies (AEAS) at Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Korea, is a referred multidisciplinary journal dedicated to East Asian Studies. With original contributions from all parts of the world, the SJEAS enjoys thriving reputation and increasing readership in the field of East Asian Studies. The SJEAS published biannually in April and October has been selected for coverage in Thomson Reuters' Current Contents / Arts & Humanities, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index.

Call for Papers

The SJEAS publishes articles, research notes, and book reviews relating to East Asian matters.
The SJEAS also seeks original academic papers, which delved into the past and present of East Asia, primarily within the field of the humanities. Research areas the SJEAS prefers include philosophy, religion, art, anthropology, archaeology, literature, history and culture. Scholars considering submission are encouraged to use a multidisciplinary approach which transcend the conventional boundaries between these subjects. Paper on social science are also welcomed as long as topics and methodologies benefit and broaden the perspectives of humanities.

Sponsored by the AEAS, which aims to promote interdisciplinary research relating to the region of East Asia, the SJEAS generally supports academic interests and goals of the (AEAS).
While respecting explorations of the past and the present of East Asia that remain within traditional boundaries, the SJEAS also seeks papers that deal with East Asia in its whole as well as works, which explore common identities and mutual contrasts found in East Asian countries. All contributions are peer-reviewed and subject to final decision by the SJEAS editorial committee.

Instructions to Authors

All contributions in the journal are peer-reviewed.
Essays should be written in good English and not require further corrections. Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout. A length of approximately 10,000 words is preferred for an article, and approximately 1,500 words for a book-review. The author's name, affiliation, mailing address, email address, as well as the title of the manuscript should appear on the cover sheet. An abstract of no more than 150 words, a glossary with about 100 Romanized East Asian terms and references should be included in the paper. Please use footnotes rather than endnotes. An up-to-date curriculum vitae should also be included in the manuscript.

The SJEAS in general follows the Chicago Manual of Style; however, the journal's own style predominates and therefore contributors are suggested to observe and follow the SJEAS's text convention closely. Manuscripts can be sent as a MS word file.

Citations

1.) The SJEAS recommends parenthetical in-text citation by author and date
     For example, (Smith 2000, 80).
2) In parenthetical in-text citations, the surname of the author (or authors' surnames connected by "and" if two
authors, or the first author's surname followed by "et al." if more than two authors) and year of publication
and page numbers should be given, e.g.,(Barfield 1989), (Franke and Twichett 1994, 35-39),
(Kim et al. 1994, 118), or "according to Kim (2001, 112)."
3) Where more than one reference is cited, they should be placed with the oldest date first, e.g., (Fletcher
1968, 210; Barfield 1989; Mote 1999, 125). If more than one reference by the same author is cited, the name
need not be repeated. For example, (Kim 1983, 1987a, 1987b, 1991; Yi 1995). If more than one author listed in
the references has the same surname; the full name should be cited to avoid confusion.
    For example, (Kang Man'gil 2004).
4) Footnotes should be kept to an absolute minimum and are reserved for and restricted to only those
explications that cannot be readily fit into the narrative text. Footnotes may contain parenthetical in-text
citations to other published works, with the full bibliographic entries appearing in the bibliography.
