About the journal
Established in 1998, The Design Journal is an international refereed journal covering all aspects of design. The journal welcomes articles on design in both cultural and commercial contexts. The journal is published three times a year and provides a forum for design scholars, professionals, educators and managers worldwide. It publishes thought-provoking work that will have a direct impact on design knowledge and that challenges assumptions and methods, while being open-minded about the evolving role of design.

Notes for Contributors
The Design Journal welcomes original communications and articles which have relevance to design practice, theory, management and education. Papers are accepted on the understanding that they have not been published elsewhere and are not currently being considered by other journals for publication. Submission of a paper will imply that, if accepted for publication, the paper will not be published in the same form in any language without the consent of the publisher.
Copyright On acceptance of the paper for inclusion in the journal, authors are requested to assign copyright of the paper to Berg Publishers. This allows Berg to sanction reprints and photocopies and to authorize the reprint of complete issues or volumes according to demand. Authors retain proprietary rights and veto over third party publication will be retained. Authors wishing to publish elsewhere must first seek permission from Berg and will be required to credit The Design Journal and Berg Publishers as the original publishers of the paper.
Refereeing All papers submitted will be subject to blind refereeing by two referees. Papers will be accepted without change, accepted subject to revisions requested by referees being carried out by authors as required, or rejected on grounds of content or length.
Preparation of papers Papers should be between 5,000 and 7,000 words long and should include a brief abstract of between 100 and 150 words in length (describing the content of the paper and summarizing the findings), references and acknowledgements, plus authors’ biographical details and addresses. All contributions should be written in English. One complete hard copy of the text and two copies with author name(s) and other identifiers removed (printed on one side of the paper only) should be sent, together with a CD disk of the text in Word. Authors should supply plain, unformatted text. Spelling should follow English not American style, but with ‘ize’ not ‘ise’ for words such as ‘organise’ (not for words which keep ‘ise’ e.g. ‘advertise’). Headings should be all in capitals. Single quotes should be used, with double quotes for quotes within quotes. Gender-specific references should be avoided if possible. Numbers should be written in words for one to ten (e.g. ‘ten’) and in figures over ten (e.g. ‘12’). Authors’ names and organizations should appear on the first page of the paper only. Two or three key words summarizing the paper should be indicated.
Illustrations and figures Illustrations, suitable for mono reproduction, should not be inserted in the text. One copy of each should be provided separately and identified with the figure number, title of paper and name of author(s). All photographs, graphs, charts and diagrams should be referred to as figures and numbered in one consecutive sequence with Arabic numerals (e.g. ‘Figure 2’). The approximate position of each illustration should be indicated in the text. A list of captions for the figures should be submitted on a separate sheet of paper. Captions should include keys to symbols. All original illustrative material will be returned to the author(s) unless it forms part of the printed text and/or is supplied on disk. All diagrams, illustrations and photographs (minimum 300dpi at half-page size) should be sent as TIFF files. Permission for use must be sought from the copyright owners of ALL illustrations including those sourced from websites. Copies of permissions must be sent in with the paper. Images downloaded direct from websites are unlikely to be of suitably high definition.
References References should be submitted following the Harvard system and references should be indicated in the text by listing the author's name and year of publication in brackets, e.g. (Smith and Brown, 1997). References by the same author(s) and from the same year should be differentiated by the suffices (a), (b), (c) etc. The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper with all publications (i.e. periodicals, books, reports etc) shown in italics and article or paper titles shown in single quotes. Authors must ensure that references are accurate, that material reproduced from sources which are not their own is fully credited and that where necessary permission for reproduction from others’ material is sought and granted in writing. References or bibliographies for whole theses cannot be included in The Design Journal due to shortage of space.
Copies On publication, authors will be sent a PDF of the final version of their article for personal use only. Authors are also entitled to a complimentary copy of the issue they contributed to. Details on how to obtain it will be sent upon publication. Additional copies of the issue can be purchased at a discount rate from Berg.
