Connaissance des Arts was founded in 1952 by the Hachette Réalités group, with the help of experts, dealers and auctioneers like Maître Maurice Rheims. With as many as 50 000 subscribers, it was the first art magazine devoted to antiques, fine and decorative arts and art objects, whose aim was to combine in-depth articles with color reproductions. In 1975, the magazine was purchased by D. Jodidio and La Sociét?française de Promotion artistique was established. Francis Spar was then replaced by Philip Jodidio as Editor-in-Chief, who broadened the journal's editorial coverage by including articles on architecture. Thanks to the publication of special issues in 1989, the publishing house expanded. In April 2000, the periodical was sold to the luxury group LVMH. After Philip Jodidio's departure in 2002, the Editorial Department was reorganized under the leadership of Guy Boyer. The new editorial design gives each article a particular angle (studio visits, private collections, analysis of a style, study of a work. It combines scholarly texts with broader issues, thus offering a wide variety of topics.
