About the journal
The Classical Journal (ISSN 0009-8353) is published by the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS), the largest regional classics association in the United States and Canada, and is now over a century old. All members of CAMWS receive the journal as a benefit of membership; non-member and library subscriptions are also available. The journal appears four times a year (October-November, December-January, February-March, April-May). Each issue consists of about 100 pages.
The Classical Journal contains a mix of academic articles and notes on Graeco-Roman antiquity, generally with a literary, historical or cultural focus; paedagogical articles and notes, most having to do with the challenges of teaching Latin in modern high schools, colleges and universities; book reviews; and a list of books received. In addition, CJ generally publishes the annual CAMWS Presidential Address and the year's Ovationes. Abstracts of all academic articles and notes in volumes 101 (2005-06), 102 (2006-07), and 103.1 (2007) are posted here, along with abstracts for articles due to appear in 103.2. PDF versions of a number of recent Forum articles are also available. Back issues of Classical Journal (through 2003-04) are now available on JSTOR; CAMWS members whose academic institution does not provide them with access to JSTOR may purchase individual access to the CJ archives through the association's business office.
Instructions to Authors
All submissions to The Classical Journal are blind-refereed; the refereeing process generally takes four to six months from the date of initial submission. Turn-around time from submission of final copy to publication is generally six to nine months, but may vary due to the need to put together four quarterly issues, each of an appropriate length and with an appropriate balance of material.
Electronic submission is preferred, although hard copy may sometimes be requested afterward (especially when difficulties arise with Greek fonts). Authors should remove all references within the text that might identify them to referees; this is the author's responsibility rather than the editor's. Failure to remove such references may compromise the refereeing process, and require that the piece be re-refereed (or simply rejected). Please be aware that word-processing programs sometimes embed identifiers (often under File: Properties, or as headers or footers) that cannot be seen on all computers. Any references removed for submission may be reinserted in final copy.
Final copy of articles and book reviews accepted for publication must be formatted to CJ standards.
