About the journal
The Classical Bulletin publishes articles on Greek and Roman literatures, languages, history, social life, art, philosophy, religion, pedagogy, the history of classical scholarship, and the classical tradition. We especially encourage contributions in English from abroad and book reviews on scholarship originally published in other languages.
Instructions to Authors STYLE SHEET FOR CONTRIBUTORS OF ARTICLES
1. Contributors should send manuscripts as attached documents; contributors may if necessary also send three hard copies (see below for e-mail and regular post addresses). An electronic copy or one on a disk will be required if the article is accepted for publication. Retain a copy as exactly submitted for publication consideration (the readers? comments will often refer to specific pages and lines). Manuscripts will not be returned. 2. Manuscripts should be typed (including Greek) and double-spaced throughout with ample margins. 3. Notes should be rendered as footnotes (no endnotes) at the bottom of each page. 4. Manuscripts should be proofread, especially with reference to citations and bibliography. The editors will strive for accuracy, but it is the author?s responsibility to be sure that all quotations in Greek and Latin are correct. 5. Insert only one space after punctuation and words in italics. 6. Put quotation marks (preferably smart-quotes) outside commas and periods. 7. Italicize titles of books and journals, but use quotation marks (preferably smart-quotes) for article titles and book chapters. 8. Use standard abbreviations of journals, handbooks, and collections as found in L?Année philologique, The Oxford Latin Dictionary, and Liddell and Scott, A Greek-English Lexicon. Do not abbreviate journal titles of a single word. 9. Refer to ancient works within parentheses within the text. Use standard abbreviations as found in The Oxford Latin Dictionary and Liddell and Scott, A Greek-English Lexicon. 10. Use Arabic numbers wherever possible. 11. Italicize brief Latin quotations within the text. Longer quotes should be in block quotations (without italics) and translated. 12. Works cited in notes should be referenced to a bibliography that the author supplies in full at the end of the article. Reference to a work in the notes should be in short form, as follows: Mayer 1982:315; Skinner 2005:43. The bibliographical entries should be as follows: Mayer, Roland. 1982. ?Neronian Classicism.? AJP 103:305?18. Skinner, Marilyn B. 2005. Sexuality in Greek and Roman Culture. Malden, MA: Blackwell. If two or more works by a single author are cited from the same year, distinguish them in notes and bibliography by year as follows: Sullivan 1968a:24; Sullivan 1968b:57. Sullivan, J. P. 1968a. The Satyricon of Petronius: A Literary Study. Bloomington: Indiana University Press. ?.1968b. ?Petronius, Seneca, and Lucan: A Neronian Literary Feud?? TAPA 99:453?467. 13. Because submissions are refereed anonymously, authors should not indicate their identity or academic affiliation except in a separate cover letter. 14. Articles that do not take into account these guidelines may be returned for retyping or revision before the publication consideration process begins. 15. SUBMISSIONS SHOULD BE SENT TO Shannon N. Byrne (byrn@xavier.edu), Executive Editor, Xavier University, Classics Department, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45207.
BOOK REVIEWS: individuals may request to review books within their areas of expertise. BOOK REVIEW REQUESTS and BOOKS FOR REVIEW should be sent to Shannon N. Byrne (byrn@xavier.edu), Executive Editor, Xavier University, Classics Department, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45207.
