About the journal
Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies logo
Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies is an internationally recognised, peer-reviewed journal and one of the leading publications in its field. It is viewed as an important outlet for current research. Published twice a year in spring and autumn, its remit has always been to facilitate the publication of high-quality research and discussion in all aspects of Byzantine and Modern Greek scholarship, whether historical, literary or social-anthropological. It welcomes research, criticism, contributions on theory and method in the form of articles, critical studies and short notes.

SCOPE AND CONTEXT
Since its foundation the scope of the journal has been substantially expanded to include articles dealing with aspects of Ottoman and Turkish history, where they overlap with or are relevant to the fields of Byzantine and Modern Greek studies. BMGS also publishes reviews in English of books dealing with any aspect of Byzantine and Modern Greek studies, and the Editors are happy to consider books for review that have been published in any of the languages which fall within the bounds of scholarship in its fields.

On the post-Byzantine and modern periods, BMGS has published articles relating to Greece and the Greek-speaking and Greek Orthodox worlds (including Cyprus, but also the wider Balkan area, Turkey, and other regions where Greeks have lived) in the following fields: literature (including oral poetry), theatre (including shadow theatre), cinema, music, printing, publishing and other media, language (including the language controversy), history, anthropology, geography, geopolitics, cultural theory and cultural studies more generally, and ethnic and national identity. In the Byzantine field it has likewise published a wide range of articles on such diverse themes as literature and historiography, hagiography, epistolography, archaeology, medieval taxation, military technology, textiles, art and architecture, political, and social and economic history. BMGS welcomes high-quality submissions based on original research in these and other areas.

The journal also regularly publishes Critical Studies, which set out to review recent work in a particular field; while the Short Notes section is intended for brief comments or limited discussion of particular issues not requiring a major article.

The Editors would like to be able to strike a balance between Byzantine and modern material in terms of space within each volume, although this is not always possible because of the high quality of the material submitted. Moreover, to draw a strict dividing line between Byzantine and post-Byzantine Greek studies in particular would obscure the continuities that persist in many aspects of language, literature and culture.

THE HISTORY OF THE JOURNAL
Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies was founded by Professor Donald Nicol (1923-2003) in 1975 and was initially published by Basil Blackwell & Co before moving in 1984 to be published in-house by the staff at the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Birmingham. 2004 marks a further change in the journal's history as responsibility for the production, distribution, marketing and sales management is handed over to Maney Publishing, freeing up the Editors from these business management constraints to give them more time to concentrate on the content and editorial development of the journal.

Abstracting and indexing services that cite Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies include: American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies, America: History and Life, Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Linguistic Bibliography, Current Contents, Historical Abstracts and MLA International Bibliography

Notes for Contributors - Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies

All Editorial correspondence should be addressed to:

Dr Ruth Macrides, Editor, BMGS

Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman & Modern Greek Studies

University of Birmingham, Edgbaston,

Birmingham B15 2TT.

Fax: 0121-414 6866

General

The maximum length of an article should be 8,000 words, including footnotes; for critical studies, 3,500 words.

Articles for consideration should be initially submitted in hard-copy form, in two copies.

Authors should supply their postal and e-mail addresses.

Manuscripts must be clearly typewritten/printed and spaced x 1.5 on A4 or 11" x 8"

Faded photocopies or print-outs will not be accepted.

They should be page-numbered from beginning to end in one sequence.

Typescripts should have ample margins throughout, and the type should be on one side of the page only.

Once a submission has been accepted, the author is asked to send the final version on disk using a PC- and Windows-compatible format, together with hard copy.

Please do NOT use "read-only"  CDs for the text of your article or for captions.

Authors should ensure that all diacritics in all languages should be correctly placed on the hard copy.

The inclusion of English translations of passages in Greek and other foreign languages is a matter for discussion between authors and the editors. Authors are advised to consult the editors about this matter when preparing their submissions.

BMGS is not normally able to publish colour illustrations.

For articles only, the author's name and affiliation should be given below the title, and an abstract of not more than 100 words, outlining the contents and argument of the article, should precede the text of the article.

Spelling: British spelling conventions should be followed. In words where there is a choice between ending in -ize and in -ise, -ize should be used.

Apostrophes: In the possessive case of Greek names ending in -s, "s'" should be used, not   "s's": thus Socrates'.

Footnotes should be confined to necessary references.

Alterations in Proofs are expensive and should be kept to an absolute minimum. The journal reserves the right to charge authors the cost of making alterations and additions (but not, of course, printer's corrections).

Italics should be indicated in the typescript either by underlining or by italic typeface.

Quotations: Verse quotations should be marked as such in the left-hand margin.

Abbreviations should not be used in the body of the text, except for standard cases such as Dr, Mr, Mrs, Ms, St.

Single inverted commas should be used for quotations, for words or phrases used in a special or technical sense, and for titles of articles etc., but quotations over 50 words should be indented and single-spaced without inverted commas.

Double Inverted Commas should be used only to indicate a quotation or title within another quotation or title.

References

Titles of books should be given in full on first reference, with author's name and place and date of publication. The author's surname and the title of the work (abbreviated if necessary) should be used subsequently (op.cit. should be used only if the work has been cited shortly before), and in the case of a work cited frequently a stated abbreviation may be used. Where necessary, the place of deposit of a book, pamphlet, typescript etc. should be stated in brackets.

Citations from books should be made thus:

R.J.H. Jenkins, Byzantium: The Imperial Centuries: A.D. 610-1071 (London 1966) 160-85.

C. Diehl, Manuel d'art byzantin, 2nd edn, II (Paris 1926) 552-3.

Syméon le Nouveau Théologien, Catéchèses, 3 vols., ed. B. Krivochéine

[Sources Chrétiennes, 96, 104, 113] (Paris 1963-5).

Modern Criticism and Theory, ed. D. Lodge (London and New York 1988) 36-42.

For works published in English, initial capitals should be used for all major words. For other languages, follow local rules.

Citations from periodicals and edited volumes should be made thus, using abbreviations necessary (see below):

B. Coleman, 'George Horton: the literary diplomat', BMGS 30 (3002) 81-93.

P. Golden, 'The peoples of the Russian forest belt', in D. Sinor (ed.), The Cambridge History of Early Inner Asia (Cambridge 1990) 256-8.

For works published in English, initial capitals should be used only for proper names and for the first word following a colon. A list of abbreviations of journals and collections is included at the front of each volume of BMGS. When in doubt, contributors should give the full title of every periodical cited.

Citations from Byzantine authors should be made by author's name, transliterated from the Greek, title of the work as given by the editor, name of editor, volume number, place and date of publication, and page number. Thus

George Pachymeres, Relations historiques, ed. A. Failler, I (Paris 1984), 61. (Thereafter Pachymeres, I, 61). Nikephoros Gregoras, Byzantina Historia, ed. L. Schopen, II (Bonn 1830), 1012. (Thereafter Gregoras, II, 1012).

References to Publications in Greek

Authors' names should be transliterated, while titles of books and journals should be given in Greek characters. Places of publication and other information should be in English. Do not translate Greek titles into English:

Books for Review

Please send copies and full publication details to the Reviews Editor, BMGS, Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies, School of Historical Studies, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT. Those submitting reviews should submit one copy on disk in Word (PC compatible only) as well as two hard copies. The review should be preceded by the title of the book and should follow house style as described above for articles.

Illustrations

Inclusion of illustrations is at the discretion of the Editor. They should be supplied separately, with a separate list of captions, including credit for reproduction. In the text there should be a reference for each figure (see figure 1, etc.) and preferred position and groupings in the text should be clearly indicated. Digital images should be provided in CMYK format as TIFF or EPS files in high resolution suitable for printing. As a guideline, images should be submitted at a minimum input scanning resolution of 300 dpi for full colour, 350-400 dpi for half tones, 600 dpi for slides or transparencies, 800 dpi for simple line and 1200 dpi for fine line illustrations. Please note that the final reproduction quality is dependent on original supply of correct format and resolution. Where digital images are unavailable good quality originals should be supplied with glossy black and white print at least 6"x8" for halftones. The author will be required to provide written evidence of permission to reproduce images (in all formats, in perpetuity and in all geographical regions worldwide) from the copyright owner for the use of any illustrative matter in the journal and will be liable for any fee charged by the owner of the image. The caption should include relevant credit of the permission of the copyright holder to reproduce the image. For more information please see www.maney.co.uk/author/copyright.

Online Colour

It is possible for colour illustrations to be published in the online version of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies free of charge. Images submitted in colour will be published in black and white in the printed journal (unless otherwise agreed with the journal editor) but will be posted online in colour. Authors have the opportunity to enhance the appearance of their article, improve its clarity, and heighten its impact by using colour for diagrams, graphs and illustrations. Authors should consider the use of colour within their articles carefully to ensure that meaning is not lost from diagrams when produced in greyscale in the print journal. Authors should bear this in mind when preparing the format of the images for submission and when obtaining permission to use material from third partiesFor more information please sewww.maney.co.uk/authors/copyright.

Copyright

Authors who wish to reproduce material from previously published sources or where the copyright is owned by a third party, such as sections of text, tables or images, must obtain written permission from the copyright holder (usually the publisher) and the author(s)/artist(s) of the original material. A line giving the full source of the material should be included in the manuscript. If material from the author's own published work is to be used, permission must still be obtained from that publisher. Copyright is required for use in all formats (including digital), in perpetuity and in all geographical regions worldwide. For more information, please see the copyright advice for authors section of the author section of the Maney website www.maney.co.uk/authors/copyright.

Permissions

Any reproduction from Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, apart from for the purposes of review, private research or 'fair dealing', must have the permission of the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies. Requests for such permission must be addressed to permissions@maney.co.uk or Permissions Section, Maney Publishing, at the above address, who acts on behalf of the Centre. In all cases, acknowledgement must be made to Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies.

Proofs

PDF proofs will be sent by email to the author nominated for correspondence. Hard copy proofs can be sent by post if no email address is available, by airmail if outside the UK. Corrections must be returned to the editor within twelve days of receipt, preferably by email.
