About the journal
Aims & Scope
Language Assessment Quarterly: An International Journal (LAQ) is dedicated to the advancement of theory, research, and practice in first, second, and foreign language assessment for school, college, and university students; for employment; and for immigration and citizenship. LAQ publishes original articles addressing theoretical issues, empirical research, and professional standards and ethics related to language assessment, as well as interdisciplinary articles on related topics, and reports of language test development and testing practice. All articles are peer-reviewed. The journal is directed to an international audience. Examples of topic areas appropriate for LAQ include:
¡ì assessment from around the world at all instructional levels including specific purposes;
¡ì assessment for immigration and citizenship and other ¡®gate-keeping' contexts;
¡ì issues of validity, reliability, fairness, access, accommodations, administration, and legal remedies;
¡ì assessment in culturally and/or linguistically diverse populations;
¡ì professional standards and ethical practices for assessment professionals;
¡ì interdisciplinary interfaces between language assessment and learning;
¡ì issues related to technology and computer-based assessment;
¡ì innovative and practical methods and techniques in developing assessment instruments; * recent trends in analysis of performance; and
¡ì issues of social-political and socio-economic concern to assessment professionals.

Aims and Scope Language Assessment Quarterly: An International Journal (LAQ) is dedicated to the advancement of theory, research, and practice in first, second, and foreign language assessment for school, college, and university students; language assessment for employment; and language assessment for immigration and citizenship. LAQ publishes original articles addressing theoretical issues and empirical research related to language assessment, as well as interdisciplinary articles on related topics, and reports of language test development and testing practice. LAQ encourages novel ways of thinking about emerging issues (conceptual, empirical, clinical, historical, or methodological) and the use of varying research methodologies (quantitative, qualitative, or ethnographic) and narrative styles (research articles, essay reviews, interviews, and practitioner perspectives). All articles will be peer reviewed. The journal also includes commissioned book reviews, commentaries, short articles on practical test development, and occasional thematic article series (e.g., a thematic issue of the journal). Offers for these categories of publication are also welcome. Submission and Preparation of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be submitted to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hlaq. Once submitted, all manuscripts are anonymously reviewed by three scholars appropriate for the topic, content, and research methodology. Note that the review process normally takes three months. All manuscripts should be prepared according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 5th Edition. Manuscripts should be no longer than 9,000 words, including abstract, text, tables, figures, footnotes, references, and appendices. Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work and for obtaining permission from copyright holders to reprint or adapt tables, figures, photographs, or quotations of 500 words or more. Authors should write to the original author(s) and publisher to request nonexclusive rights in all languages to use the material in the article and in future editions. Illustrations
Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
¡ì 300 dpi or higher
¡ì sized to fit on journal page
¡ì EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
¡ì submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Reproduction Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only reproduction or for print + online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if print + online reproduction costs are paid. Rates for color art reproduction are: Online Only Reproduction: $225 for the first page of colors; $100 per page of the next three pages of color. A maximum charge of $525 applies. Print + Online Reproduction: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print. References
References should be cited in the text by author and date (Smith, 1983). The reference list should be prepared in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). Examples:

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.
