About the journal

Aims & Scope

The British Journal of Religious Education (BJRE) is an international peer-reviewed journal which has a pedigree stretching back to 1934 when it began life as Religion in Education. In 1961 the title was changed to Learning for Living, and the present title was adopted in 1978. It is the leading journal in Britain for the dissemination of international research in religion and education and for the scholarly discussion of issues concerning religion and education internationally.

BJRE aims to promote and report research and scholarship in religious education and related fields such as values education, spiritual education and intercultural education insofar as they relate to the discussion of religion or religious traditions and movements. Contributions relating to the following are especially welcome:

research and scholarship on religious education as understood in the UK publicly funded school sector

international research and scholarship relating to religious education in the schools of plural societies

religious education in faith based schools

religious perspectives on education

childhood and religion in community and school settings

Contributions are welcome from researchers and scholars of any faith or none in all sectors of education (including higher education, schools, educational administration and inspection). Submissions from graduate students are welcome.

Abstracting & Indexing

The British Journal of Religious Education is currently abstracted and indexed in Academic Search; ATLA Religion Database; Australian Education Index; British Education Index; Contents Pages in Education; Educational Research Abstracts online (ERA); ERIC; ERIH (European Reference Index for the Humanities, Pedagogical and Educational Research); IBR/IBZ; Religious and Theological Abstracts; Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts

Papers should not exceed 6,000 words including notes and references. An electronic version of the paper, along with one hardcopy version, should be sent to Ursula McKenna, Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit, Institute of Education, University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL, UK. An electronic version should be emailed to u.mckenna@warwick.ac.uk.

Papers should be typed on one side of A4 (or equivalent) sized paper, double-spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution. In order to guarantee anonymous peer review the name(s) of the author(s) and the address where the work was carried out should only appear on a separate first page. Each article should be accompanied by an abstract/summary of 100-500 words and 3-4 keywords, also on a separate sheet. The full postal address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered. Endnotes to the text should be avoided as far as possible. Authors should send the final, revised version of their articles in both hard copy paper and electronic forms. It is essential that the hard copy (paper) version exactly matches the material sent either on disk or by email attachment. Please print out the hard copy from the disk or file you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final version with the disk/email attachment to the journal's editorial office. Save all files on a standard 3.5 inch high-density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word in a PC format. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only." If sending by email attachment then please save as Microsoft Word.

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Articles will be anonymously reviewed by at least two reviwers. Rejected manuscripts will not be returned unless sufficient stamps/international postal coupons have been sent.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.
