Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission
Manuscripts, in English, and editorial inquiries should be submitted to the Editor:
Charles Orser
Research and Collections
New York State Museum
3140 Cultural Education Center
Albany, NY 12230
E-mail: corser@mail.nysed.gov
It is strongly recommended that prospective authors contact the Editor before beginning to write, to ensure there is no significant overlap with other manuscripts in progress.
Copyright
Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Springer will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.
Manuscript Style
Type double−spaced on one side of 8 1/2 x 11 inch or A4 white paper using generous margins on all sides. All copies must be dark, sharp, and clear. Computer−generated manuscripts must be of letter quality (not dot−matrix).
Order the elements comprising the manuscript as follows:
title page, abstract, key words, text, appendix, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure−caption list.
All acknowledgments (including those for grant and financial support) should be typed in one paragraph on a separate page that directly precedes the References Cited section.
A title page is to be provided and should include the title of the article, author's name (no degrees), author's affiliation, and suggested running head. The affiliation should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city, and state (or nation) and should be typed as a footnote to the author's name. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof. For office purposes, the title page should include the complete mailing address, telephone number, and fax number of the one author designated to review proofs.
An abstract is to be provided, preferably no longer than 50−100 words.
A list of 4 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes.
List references alphabetically at the end of the paper in a section entitled References Cited and refer to them in the text by name and year in parentheses. Where there are three or more authors, only the first author's name is given in the text, followed by et al.
References should include (in this order):
last names and initials of all authors, year published, title of article, name of publication, volume number, and inclusive pages.
The style and punctuation of the references should conform to that used in the journal−illustrated by the following examples:
Journal Article
Hard, R. J., Mauldin, R. P., and Raymond, G. R. (1996). Mano size, stable carbon isotope ratios, and macrobotanical remains as multiple lines of evidence of maize dependence in the American Southwest. Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory 3: 253−318.
Book
Orser, C. E., Jr. (1996). A Historical Archaeology of the Modern World, Plenum Press, New York.
Contribution to a Book
Wilson, S. M., and Rogers, J. D. (1993). Historical dynamics in the contact era. In Rogers, J. D., and Wilson, S. M. (eds.), Ethnohistory and Archaeology: Approaches to Postcontact Change in the Americas, Plenum Press, New York, pp. 3−15.
Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and should be typed at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Place a line above the footnote, so that it is set off from the text. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.
Illustration Style
Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals. The captions for illustrations should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. All illustrations must be complete and final, i.e., camera−ready. Photographs should be large, glossy prints, showing high contrast. Drawings should be high−quality laser prints or should be prepared with india ink. Either the original drawings or high−quality photographic prints are acceptable. Each numbered figure must be on a separate sheet of sturdy paper not exceeding 8 1/2 x 11 inches in size. Identify figures on the back with author's name and number of the illustration. Electronic artwork submitted on disk should be in the TIFF or EPS format (1200 dpi for line and 300 dpi for half−tones and gray−scale art). Color art should be in the CYMK color space. Artwork should be on a separate disk from the text, and hard copy must accompany the disk.
Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Center the title above the table, and type explanatory footnotes (indicated by superscript lowercase letters) below the table.
Submission of Accepted Manuscripts
After a manuscript has been accepted for publication and after all revisions have been incorporated, manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor's Office as electronic files on disk. Label the disk with identifying information -software, journal name, and first author's last name.
Page Charges
The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs.
Springer Open Choice
In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription−based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springers online platform SpringerLink. To publish via Springer Open Choice, upon acceptance please visit the link below to complete the relevant order form and provide the required payment information. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will publish as regular subscription−model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles
