About the journal

Aims & Scope

Shakespeare is a major peer-reviewed journal, publishing articles drawn from the best of current international scholarship on the most recent developments in Shakespearean criticism. Its principal aim is to bridge the gap between the disciplines of Shakespeare in Performance Studies and Shakespeare in English Literature and Language. The journal builds on the existing aim of the British Shakespeare Association, to exploit the synergies between academics and performers of Shakespeare

Standard text

The standard text for all quotations of Shakespeare is the second edition of Stanley Wells and Gary Taylor (editors) William Shakespeare: The Complete Works (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2005). All quotations should use this text unless they are referring to the editorial work embodied in other editions. Where the 1623 Folio is quoted, the choice is either to cite that edition (in which case signatures, not page numbers, should be the form of reference) or else the Norton Facsimile (New York: W.W. Norton, 1968 [2nd edition 1996]) by Charles Hinman should be used, in which case references should be by the Through Line Numbering (TLN) of that edition. Where early quartos are quoted, they should be cited as early books (again by signature) or via modern facsimiles (by TLN).

Submission

All submissions should be made online at the Shakespeare Manuscript Central site (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rshk). New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from the files to allow them to be sent anonymously to reviewers. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as ¡°File not for review .

File Upload:
Please note: MS Word files with file extension .docx can cause problems for potential reviewers, please save any MS Word files as a .doc file before uploading

Performance Reviews

Reviews of performances should follow the same style and standard text as critical articles. Reviews of theatrical performances should be written in the past tense; reviews of films should be written in the present tense. Titles should follow the format playwright-title-director-company-venue-date, as in the following example: Review of Shakespeare's The Tempest (directed by Jack Shepherd for the Love and Madness Ensemble) at the Studio, Sheffield Theatres, 19 September 2007. Please specify the date or dates of the performance being reviewed.

Figures

Figures accompanying an article submitted for consideration should be submitted as low quality JPEG files, separate from the text.

Photographs or illustrations for articles accepted for publication should be of print quality, provided as separate JPEG, TIFF, or EPS files with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Images (preferably in grayscale or black-and-white) should be supplied in a finished form, suitable for reproduction on a scale to permit reduction to half their original size. The author is responsible for obtaining any necessary copyright permission and meeting any associated costs. Colour images will be published online only, and will appear in black-and-white in print. Authors who propose publishing figures in colour in print should consult Taylor & Francis to agree a financial contribution to additional colour reproduction costs.

Proofs

Proofs are sent to the corresponding author via email. Please note that proofs are supplied for correction of errors only, and no rewriting or reorganisation of text can be undertaken at this stage. Corrections must be returned to Deborah Cartmell within 3 days.

Copyright

The editors of the journal support the right of contributors to retain copyright in their articles, and require only that an 'exclusive right to publish' is granted to the publisher, Taylor & Francis. The necessary form to sign will be sent out to the contributor prior to publication.

Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources and for the payment of any fees to do so. Authors must obtain permissions before submission and include any acknowledgements in the typescript.
