About the journal
The Book Collector was founded in 1952, the brainchild of three men. One was Ian Fleming, not then famous for James Bond, but a great book-collector. The second was Percy Muir, doyen of antiquarian booksellers. And there was John Hayward, author of the great Rothschild Catalogue, friend and muse of T.S.Eliot. Hayward was effectively The Book Collector's first editor and set the style - scholarly articles, timely and well-informed news and comment - that has lasted ever since. Unfamiliar authors, contemporary collectors, book-bindings, the news behind or ahead of book-sales, the ways, good and bad, of libraries, reviews of books and booksellers' catalogues, all these have been its staple, then and since. Nicolas Barker has been editor since 1965, and over forty years has given The Book Collector international authority. The editorial board is A.S.G.Edwards, James Fergusson, Theodore Hofmann, David McKitterick and Joan Winterkorn

Published quarterly, THE BOOK COLLECTOR prints notoriously independent leading articles on matters of bibliophic moment ranging from manuscript studies to national heritage policy. It collects news and reviews of auctions, publications and trade catalogues, bibliographies and checklists, private press books, exhibitions, appointments, departures and deaths. It runs series on book collectors past and present, uncollected authors, unfamiliar libraries (public and private) and bookbindings new and old. as well as an open forum of "Bibliographical Notes and Queries" It publishes authoritative articles on subjects from medieval libraries to modern first editions, from the still contentious subject of the invention of printing to the crude but charming chapbooks printed today in the Nigerian town of Onitsha

THE BOOK COLLECTOR was founded in 1952, two years before he published Casino Royale, by Ian Fleming. Its first editor, until his death in 1965, was John Hayward, the friend and muse of T. S. Eliot. Since then it has been edited by Nicolas Barker, sometime publisher and first head of conservation at the British Library, abetted by an editorial board drawn from rare-book librarianship and the antiquarian book trade. The tone of each issue is intended to be scholarly, but not oppressively academic, with a plurality of contributors, unparochial in place or profession, who have as a common aim their desire to share their enthusiasms and knowledge in as accessible a way as possible.

The readers of THE BOOK COLLECTOR come from every continent. It is handsomely produced, well designed and printed (still from metal type), on high-quality paper with numerous illustrations. After more than fifty years of publication it is established as a major resource of permanent value for book dealers, book scholars and book collectors.

THE BOOK COLLECTOR is published in March, June, September and December. It is available only by subscription, direct from the publisher or through booksellers and subscription agents. A sample copy of a recent issue will be gladly sent on request.

We would like to point out that THE BOOK COLLECTOR has no connection with THE BOOK AND mag('cap'); MAGAZINE COLLECTOR. We are unable to give you a web address for that publication since, as far as we know, it has no website.
