About the journal

Philosophia Mathematica is the only journal in the world devoted specifically to philosophy of mathematics. The journal publishes peer-reviewed new work in philosophy of mathematics, the application of mathematics, and computing. In addition to main articles, sometimes grouped on a single theme, there are shorter discussion notes, letters, and book reviews. The journal publishes three issues per year.
Instructions to Authors
EDITORIAL POLICY
Philosophia Mathematica is a refereed journal that sets out to disseminate new work in the philosophy of pure and applied mathematics including computing, and, by doing so, to be a means of promoting world-wide scholarly discussion. Language is English.
A manuscript submitted to Philosophia Mathematica as an article should present a position that is explicitly related within the text to the historical background of issues or present some issue in a new light. The paramount criteria for acceptance will be intellectual value and interest, preferably to more than one of its constituencies. Organization, clarity, and literateness will also be evaluated. If possible, suggestions for improvement will be made.
The objective is to publish material that scholars will want to read and respond to, not merely to create an archive for librarians to file. To that end, letters are encouraged. In addition, responses to published material, longer than what one would call a letter but not necessarily as ambitious as an article may be submitted for publication as notes.
SUBMISSIONS
Submissions -- both full papers and discussion notes -- on topics of special issues, past, present, and future, are especially welcome. They should be sent to:
Professor Robert Thomas Department of Mathematics University of Manitoba Winnepeg Manitoba Canada R3T 2N2 E-mail: Robert_Thomas@Umanitoba.CA
E-mail submissions are preferred but, if hardcopy is being sent, three copies of manuscripts are requested from authors in North America and preferred from others. Submission implies that the paper has not been published and is not under consideration elsewhere and that all named authors approve of submission.
Manuscripts must be typewritten or of what is called nearly letter quality, double-spaced (including footnotes), and on one side of 8½" x 11" or A4 bond paper with 1" or 3 cm margins all around and numbered. An abstract (maximum 100 words) and an organized list of references must also be double-spaced at the end.
Literature references in the form 'Jones [1991]' are preferred to the less memorable '[5]'. Text must be reproducible in TEX. All else must be supplied in photocopy of camera-ready form with location in the text clearly indicated. Authors should retain originals of non-textual material and a copy of the text, as submissions will not normally be returned.
Funding information Details of all funding sources for the work in question should be given in a separate section entitled 'Funding'. This should appear before the 'Acknowledgements' section.
The following rules should be followed:
- The sentence should begin: ‘This work was supported by …’
- The full official funding agency name should be given, i.e. ‘National Institutes of Health’, not ‘NIH’ (full RIN-approved list of UK funding agencies) Grant numbers should be given in brackets as follows: ‘[grant number xxxx]’
- Multiple grant numbers should be separated by a comma as follows: ‘[grant numbers xxxx, yyyy]’
- Agencies should be separated by a semi-colon (plus ‘and’ before the last funding agency)
- Where individuals need to be specified for certain sources of funding the following text should be added after the relevant agency or grant number 'to [author initials]'.
An example is given here: ‘This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health [AA123456 to C.S., BB765432 to M.H.]; and the Alcohol & Education Research Council [hfygr667789].
LICENCE TO PUBLISH AND OFFPRINTS
It is a condition of publication in Philosophia Mathematica that authors grant an exclusive licence to the Journal (download form here),which is operated on the Journal's behalf by the Publisher. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible.
In granting an exclusive licence, Authors may use their own material in publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance. In consideration of this provision, the publisher supplies the author with 25 offprints of the article on submission of the offprint form and free online access. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce verbal or visual material from copyright sources.
Language Editing
Particularly if English is not your first language, before submitting your manuscript you may wish to have it edited for language. This is not a mandatory step, but may help to ensure that the academic content of your paper is fully understood by journal editors and reviewers. Language editing does not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted for publication. If you would like information about one such service please click here. There are other specialist language editing companies that offer similar services and you can also use any of these. Authors are liable for all costs associated with such services.
