About the journal

Palestine Exploration Quarterly (PEQ) is the peer-reviewed journal of the Palestine Exploration Fund, which was established in 1865 as the first scholarly society dedicated to the scientific study of what was then generally known as the Holy Land. In 1869, the Fund through its Palestine Exploration Fund Quarterly Statement aimed to illuminate the Bible for its readers with scholarly information about the land of the Bible.

PEQ is the Statement's successor and while it remains true to its original brief, it has greatly widened its scope. In spite of its historical title, PEQ is concerned not just with Palestine/the land of Israel, but with the wider region of the Levant - its history, archaeology (including biblical aspects), art, languages, natural and earth ethnology, geography and natural and earth sciences. Its contents include studies of pottery and other artefacts, examination and interpretation of archaeological sites, publications and studies of inscriptions and ancient texts, articles on the history of the Levant, and the publication of archives relating to the exploration of the Levant, together with reports on archaeological work supported by the Fund, and reviews of books. PEQ publishes the work of both established and rising scholars within the field

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for authors

Contributions should be sent to the Editor at:
Professor J R Bartlett
102 Sorrento Road
Dalkey
Co. Dublin
Republic of Ireland
.

If accepted, authors will be expected to supply the final version of their article in both hard copy and on 3.5 disk in PC format, using Word. Disks must be clearly labelled with the authors name, title of the file, and format and software used. Text should not be justified; use hard returns only at the end of paragraphs; indents at start of paragraphs should be indicated by a single tab not multiple spaces; switch o. auto-hyphenation and avoid automatic footnote and endnote programs as they cause problems for the typesetter. Endnotes should be typed at the end of the text, or supplied in a separate file. Tables should be keyed horizontally from left to right using a tab between columns, not the space bar, or keyed in Words Table mode. Contributors are asked to pay particular attention to conciseness; the costs of printing are such that each issue of the Quarterly has to be kept to a maximum number of pages. While no strict limit of length is imposed, shorter articles stand a much better chance of being published soon. The Editor will not normally accept for publication articles which have appeared in substantially the same form elsewhere, whether in English or in another language.
References
References should be given in the form: (Brown 1974, 116), with a bibliography in alphabetical order at the end of the article. If footnotes are essential, they should be employed solely for the purpose of giving reference information; they should not include discussions which belong in the text. Footnotes will be printed at the end of the article.

Styling
The current style of the Quarterly should be followed closely. Bibliographical references should be given according to the pattern adopted; journal titles abbreviated in the standard forms except where reference is made to a rare or little-known journal. Reference may conveniently be made to the MHRA Style Guide 2008, obtainable in print format for £6 and downloadable in online format from the Modern Humanities Research Association website awww.style.mhra.org.uk. Transliteration of non-Roman scripts should follow normally adopted styles. Non-Roman scripts will be printed only if this is absolutely essential.

Illustrations
Images can be supplied in electronic format but files must be accompanied by hard copy output. Images should be supplied in CMYK format as good-quality TIFF or EPS files, suitable for printing. As a guide images should be submitted at a minimum input scanning resolution of 300 dpi for full colour, 350-400 dpi for half tones, 600 dpi for slides or transparencies, 800 dpi for simple line and 1200 dpi for fine line illustrations. Jpeg files will not be accepted. Please note that the final reproduction quality is dependent on original supply of correct format and resolution. Hard copy artwork supplied for scanning should be good prints. Line drawings should be in strong outline for clear reproduction. Always indicate the author's name and short title with figure number on the reverse. Any desired groupings, sizing and scale reductions should be given where possible; otherwise this is at the editor's discretion. An accompanying list of captions should be supplied on disk and as hard copy. The editor reserves the right to ask for a reduction in the number of illustrations. The author must obtain written evidence of permission to reproduce images (in all formats, in perpetuity and in all geographical regions worldwide) from the copyright owner for the use of any illustrative matter in the journal and will be liable for any fee charged by the owner of the image. The caption should include relevant credit of the permission of the copyright holder to reproduce the image. For more information please see
www.maney.co.uk/authors/copyright.
Online colour
It is possible for colour illustrations to be published in the online version of Palestine Exploration Quarterly free of charge. Images submitted in colour will be published in greyscale in the printed journal (unless otherwise agreed with the journal editor) but will be posted online in colour. Authors should consider the use of colour within their article carefully to ensure meaning is not lost in the translation of images from colour to greyscale for the printed volume. Authors should bear this in mind when preparing the format of the images for submission and when obtaining permission to use material from third parties.
For more information please see www.maney.co.uk/authors/copyright.
Proofs
Contributors will receive first proofs of their articles. The editor will be responsible for the second proofs. Corrections other than of printers errors may be disallowed or charged to the contributor.

Eprints
Authors of papers in PEQ receive a screen-resolution PDF file of the published version and one free copy of the relevant journal issue. Orders for digital offprints may be made at the time proofs are distributed. This PDF may be forwarded to co-authors without separate permission being required from the publisher. The PDF cannot be used for commercial purposes. Palestine Exploration Quarterly must be cited as the original source of publication and a link to www.maney.co.uk/journals/palestine should be included with any listing. This PDF may be posted on authors' individual websites or that of their institution. Authors are entitled to make copies of the article for reasonable personal use only. For more information please see Maney's copyright and permissions policy and advice for authors page available in the Maney Author Area www.maney.co.uk/authors/permissions. Authors should note that eprints are produced as screen resolution PDFs, so the printed quality will not match that of the print copies of the journal.
Reviews
Books for review should be sent to the Reviews Editor:

Ashley Jones
Palestine Exploration Fund
2 Hinde Mews
Marylebone Lane
London W1U 2AA
UK.

Reviewers are asked to adhere strictly to the heading style as this appears in the Quarterly and to submit copy on disk as detailed above. The Review editors suggestions about length must be observed and, if appropriate, a shorter rather than a longer review should be submitted. If a book is marginal to the area of the Quarterlys concern, or if only parts of it are relevant, this should be made clear in the review and the discussion restricted. If a book is of little value or its relevance very limited, a notice of a few lines only should be submitted. Notes of errors are better sent to the publishers than included in a review, except where a particular error undermines the sense of the book or where a book is so badly printed as to make it less than useful. The Review editor reserves the right to cut reviews which are of excessive length. No proofs are sent to reviewers. Reviewers will receive a complimentary copy of the issue in which the review appears.
Copyright
Authors who wish to reproduce material from previously published sources or where the copyright is owned by a third party, such as sections of text, tables or images, must obtain written permission from the copyright holder (usually the publisher) and the author(s)/artist(s) of the original material. A line giving the full source of the material should be included in the manuscript. Copyright is required for use in all formats (including digital), in perpetuity and in all geographical regions worldwideFor more information please see
www.maney.co.uk/authors/copyright.
Permissions
Any reproduction from Palestine Exploration Quarterly, apart from for the purposes of review, private research or 'fair dealing', must have the permission of the Palestine Exploration Fund. Requests for such permission must be addressed to Permissions Section, Maney Publishing at permissions@maney.co.uk, who act on behalf of the Fund. In all cases, acknowledgement must be made to Palestine Exploration Quarterly.

Since 1865 the PEF has been a resource for scholars and students with an interest in the Levant. Central to the Fund's role as a research facility are the wonderful and very distinctive archives and collections which are used by scholars from a wide range of academic disciplines on a regular basis. The archives include excavation journals and records, photographs, plans, maps, paintings, and drawings by scholars, explorers, and other individuals who have worked for the PEF, or who have generously donated their valuable research to its permanent care.

Official and occasionally personal correspondence of significant individuals is also included in these archives, which are invaluable for the historian and biographer. The Fund also holds a diverse collection of archaeological and ethnographic artefacts, ranging in date from the Middle Palaeolithic to the early twentieth century. The collection of preserved flora and fauna from the Levant is yet another facet of what the PEF has to offer. These collections will be useful to people with varied interests - especially archaeology, anthropology, geology, and cartography-in the holy land. The archives and collections are available for study to all members of the Fund. Modern prints of images from our photographic and picture archive are available to order.
