MUSICOLOGICAL ANNUAL

MUZIKOLOŠKI ZBORNIK

About the Musicological Annual

The Musicological Annual is the first international, scientific, musicological journal in Slovenia that has been published continuously since 1965. From the very beginning it has been issued by the Department of Musicology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. The journal is primarily focused on publishing the most recent papers in the fields of historical and systematic musicology in the local and international environments. Special attention is devoted to researching Slovenian musical heritage, i.e. music that is in one way or another linked to the Slovenian cultural environment.  By connecting Slovenian and foreign researchers, it presents scientific results to professional circles abroad. In this respect the Musicological Annual has a unique position among Slovenian specialised publications.

Since 1965, more than 600 original scientific papers by distinguished domestic and foreign authors, as well as many other contributions (bibliographies, reports, abstracts of master's theses and doctoral dissertations, etc.) have been published in the Musicological Annual. From its beginnings to the present, the Musicological Annual has been edited by: its founder Dragotin Cvetko (1965–1980), Andrej Rijavec (1981–1997), Matjaž Barbo (1998–2010), and Jernej Weiss (2011–).

The journal features highly diverse themes. In addition to basic musicological contents, it covers the fields of ethnomusicology, analytics, sociology, aesthetics, acoustics, psychology, iconography, teaching, and others. Special attention is also devoted to the interdisciplinary approach in researching music. Although the Musicological Annual is primarily intended for academic and other musicological and ethnomusicological experts, the previously mentioned thematic broadness of the journal make it highly interesting for the general reading public as well: music historians and musicians as well as admirers of music, not to mention the broad spectre of intellectuals interested in musical culture.

The Musicological Annual is issued both as a printed and an on-line journal. Two editions are published each year. The first features contributions of varying content, while the second focuses on specific themes and brings new perspectives on individual fields of musicology. Each issue is edited by a distinguished expert in musicology selected by the Editorial Board upon consultation with the International Editorial Council.

Contributions are published in the Slovenian, English or German languages. All contributions have key words and abstracts in English. The Slovenian and English abstracts are also accessible online upon publication of each issue. Specific yearly issues of the journal are accessible in their entirety on the web portal of the Digital Library of Slovenia for a period of 5 years after their publication, including texts of individual articles in PDF format (http://www.dlib.si/).

Instructions to Authors

Information for contributors

Musicological annual welcomes submissions in all areas of musicological research.

Manuscript preparation

Articles normally vary in length from 8 to 30 one-sided pages (2500-9000 words). Articles may be submitted in Slovenian, English or German. Manuscripts must be double-spaced throughout, including notes and references.
Authors should use the system of footnotes with a separate bibliography specified by the guidelines given in the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010; for the first information, see the website http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html). Full details should be given in a footnote only at the first mention of a cited work. Please note that the footnotes and bibliographies follow slightly different rules.

Use “double” quotation marks, with ‘single’ ones within if needed. Italics are used only to indicate the titles of works or words borrowed from another language. Words or passages given especial emphasis by the author should be distinguished by the use of spaced type.
All submissions should be accompanied by:

  • a cover letter including submission title, author's name and contact info (email and
    postal address) and a brief biographical note on the author;
  • 3-5 keywords in English;
  • an abstract in English of not more than 50 words suitable for publication in RILM Abstract (see the website http://www.rilm.org/submissions/pdf/Abstracts.English.pdf);
  • a summary in English of not more than 500 words and
  • a list of bibliography and sources given at the end of the article (see the website http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html).

Fully notated music should be submitted in numbered examples; such examples should not be included within sentences in the text of a submission. In general, authors should avoid using musical notation within sentences when it is possible to do so. Musical examples and other figures may be submitted in electronic form (.tiff, .pdf or .mus format) or in photo-ready copy. Each example or figures must be submitted on a separate sheet of paper, and a caption should be provided for each one. Illustrations may be submitted as good quality (at least 300dpi), glossy photographs in either colour or black and white.

Submissions

The volumes are mostly open to various proposals. However, some of the volumes are thematic and unconnected contributions are in this case included in the following number. For most of the volumes (with the exception of special thematic volumes) the articles can be submitted freely. The deadlines are June 30th and December 31st for the volume published in the next half of the year.

Manuscript must be submitted by mail (in triplicate) or by e-mail (in MS Word or .pdf format) to the following address.

All the articles intended to be published in Musicological Annual will be peer-reviewed. Two positive reviews are needed for publication.

The author of an accepted submission is required to provide an editable electronic version of their text (in MS Word or RTF format). Since manuscripts are circulated to the reviewers anonymously, contributors are asked not to include their names on each sheet.

Musicological Annual requires that authors assign their copyright to the journal once an article has been accepted. We cannot consider articles that are under review with other publications or publishers in any form, nor will we grant permission to reprint an article in a book within a year of publication in Musicological Annual. Authors are responsible for securing permission for reprinting copyrighted material quoted or otherwise used in their work.

In the process of preparing the edition, the author performs the first proofreading of the laid-out text of his/her paper. The Editor reserves the right to make corrections and other amendments, about which the author will be kept informed.

No authorship fee is paid for the articles appearing in Musicological Annual. The authors are entitled to two free copies of the publication.
