About the journal
METU JOURNAL OF THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE is a biannual refereed publication of the Middle East Technical University published every June and December. The Journal publishes articles contributing to the development of knowledge in man-environment relations, design and planning, which have theoretical or practical significance. Manuscripts, in English or Turkish, have to be approved by the Editorial Board, which are then forwarded to Referees before acceptance for publication. The Board claims no responsibility for the opinions expressed in the published manuscripts. It is assumed that the manuscripts received by the Journal are not sent to other journals for publication purposes and have not been previously published elsewhere. Translation of other authors' works is not accepted. Manuscripts that are not published are returned to the author(s). Manuscripts sent for publication should conform to the format outlined in the Writing Manual that is published in the First (June) Issue of each Volume. Authors are paid according to the provisions of the METU Rules and Regulations concerning publications
Instructions to Authors
Objective
Turkish by the METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture may be submitted in the following and related fields:
History and Theory, Architectural Design, Urban Design, City Planning, Regional Planning, Restoration and Preservation, Industrial Design, Man-Environment Relations,Building Science, Landscape Design, Applied Arts, Fine Arts.
Prospective manuscripts for publication in these fields may constitute;
1. Original theoretical articles;
2. Documents and critical expositions;
3. Applied studies related to professional practice;
4. Educational works, commentaries and reviews;
5. Miscellaneous works of unorthodox presentation;
6. Book reviews.
Evaluation of manuscripts
It is assumed that manuscripts submitted to the Editorial Board have not been sent elsewhere and have not been previously published. Primary responsibility in this regard belongs to the author. Papers delivered at professional meetings may be submitted subject to written authorization from the organization committee(s) that the proceedings have not been published. Authorization and the nature of financial or other support should be properly acknowledged in the foremost footnote.
There are no definite restrictions for the length of manuscripts. However, articles below 1000 or more than 6000 words may be accepted at the discretion of the Editorial Board.
Format of presentation
All manuscripts submitted for publication must be accurately typed. They should conform to the
regulations outlined in the Guide for Contributors. In general, manuscripts should comprise the following items:

The entire manuscript should be double-spaced on one side of A4 or US Letter size. They should be submitted to the Editorial Board in triplicate.
Miscellaneous works of unusual form may also be considered for publication at the discretion of the Editorial Board.
1£¬biographical statement
Biographical statements must be prepared in English and should not exceed 50 words.
2£¬abstract and keywords
An abstract is required for manuscripts in English (if possible in Turkish). Depending on the nature of the manuscript, the abstract should be between 200-800 words and care should be exercised not to exceed 1000 words.
Page numbers of the Abstract are given in the sequence of A1, A2, A3, ¡In addition, the designation of keywords is essential (if possible in both languages)
3£¬text
Pages in the text should be numbered in the sequence of T1, T2, T3, ¡ Two double spaces should be left between paragraphs for a uniform block format. Lines should not be indented. If the text is subdivided into sections, these subdivisions should be differentiated by numbers placed on the left as shown:

1.1.1 : Subdivision
No further divisions should be used. However, the author may opt to suggest the inclusion of these numbers in the final publication.
Quotations
Quotations longer or shorter than a sentence may be made subject to proper acknowledgement. They are given in quotation marks. Quotations consisting of one or more sentences are typed single-spaced and with an indentation of ten (10) letters flush from the written left margin of the text.
Each quotation is numbered at its end, and referred to the Notes.
Quotations with ellipsis indicate sections omitted in the original text. Comments of the author may be inserted within the quotations by the use of brackets. Foreign words in the manuscript will be printed in italics. When mathematical notations are used, the author must favor the form of notation that will facilitate printing.
For example:
Formulae must be numbered in parentheses on the right in order to ascertain their connection with the text. The author may opt to transfer the mathematical components of the text to the Notes. Infrequently used names and symbols and special words and terms must be underlined and explained the very first time they appear in the text

In cases of more than three authors only the first last name is given and the abbreviation et al. is
used to indicate the other authors.
4.notes
Notes are used to introduce a lateral argument to the main idea in the text, to provide additional information or in some cases, to directly indicate a reference. Notes are denoted by the numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.), which are printed bold in parentheses at the end of the relevant sentence.
Notes must definitely not be written under or beside the page of text with which they are associated. They must be numbered in consecutive order and written in accordance with the general format of the text. Pages comprising the notes are paginated as N1, N2, N3, ¡ independent of the text.
References used in the notes follow the same format of presentation as in the text.
5.bibliography
References are given with the pages numbered in the order of R1, R2, R3, ¡ and in alphabetical order. All references including books, articles, lectures, web sites etc. are to be given in the bibliography. If the author is not indicated, the name of the affiliated organization should be
given.

6.referees
Authors are expected to submit the names and addresses of two referees who are authorities in
the field and who may upon request assess the manuscripts submitted. However, the Editorial
Board may correspond with other referees at its discretion.
7.visual document
As in the text of the manuscript, originality is also expected in the visual document. Authors
are requested to submit originals of documents such as drawings, diagrams, tables, sketches,
photographs, maps, etc. publication of visual documents less than 10 years old in technical
subjects, and less than 50 years old in the area of the fine arts requires written authorization from
the holder(s) of copyright.
Authors are reminded that the international agreements in which Turkey is a party, the
national press-laws and the regulations of copyright are applicable in the Journal. The
copyright of any original text, picture or diagram published in the METU JFA belongs to
the author.
Documents:
In the case of documents found or produced by the author, the copyright of diagrams, tables, sketches, photographs, maps, projects, surveys etc. belongs to the author and may not be used without the author¡¯s consent. Documents produced by another author or institutions require written authorization for reproduction.
Authors are also expected to submit good quality glossy and high contrast black and white photographic prints (and preferably negatives) of all visual documents.
Photographs in general should be smaller than 13x18 cm (5¡±x7¡±). For photographs marked with inscriptions or lines two prints must be submitted, one with the inscription and the lines, and the other without them. The Editorial Board reserves the right to request materials in different formats.
8.captions
All visual documents used in the manuscript are numbered as Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, ¡ The numbers of the figures should also be inscribed on one corner or on the back of the document. Captions must be numbered consecutively as C1, C2, C3, ¡ Captions should not be appended on the pictures. References for the documents should be given in the captions according to the rules explicated in items three of this Guide.
9.symbol and abbreviations
All special symbols and abbreviations, which are used in the formulae must be compiled in a list and appended to the manuscript.Abbreviations such as ibid., op.cit., loc.cit.,should not be used.
