Method & Theory in the Study of Religion is the Journal of the North American Assiociation for the Study of Religion. Contributors are invited to submit articles, essays, responses to articles published in MTSR, and brief communications (not exceeding 1200 words) to the editors at the address on p. ii of the journal.

 Initial submission

Electronic manuscript submissions are preferred (via email attachment) in MS Word (.doc) or RTF format. If authors submit papers for consideration via surface mail, they should submit three copies of each manuscript. It should be double-spaced throughout, including notes and references, on A4 or letter-sized paper, leaving wide margins. Copies should be unreduced and single-sided. A short abstract (not exceeding 150 words) should be submitted with each manuscript. Electronic manuscripts should be prepared as follows:

Begin flush left throughout, including titles, headings, and lists. However, the first lines of new paragraphs (except those immediately after headings) should be indented.

The text must be  endless  with  hard carriage returns only at the end of paragraphs. Do not use right-margin justification or hyphenation.

Do not use the space bar to indicate indentation; use the tab or a paragraph code.

Use a normal font throughout. Do not use reduced type size in block quotations, epigraphs, notes or references. Do not use running heads. Avoid boldface or uppercase letters to indicate emphasis. Indicate words, phrases and bibliographic references by italicizing.

Format and automatically number notes using your program, with note numbers as superscripts in your text. Notes should be included as footnotes, and not as endnotes. Notes should be kept to an absolute minimum and not be used to supply references.

 Proofs

Authors receive proofs for correction which must be returned by dates determined by the publication schedule.
