About the journal
Aims and scope
The past decades have witnessed fascinating and controversial advances in the biological sciences. One may think, for instance, of methods for analyzing the basic molecular units of heredity; of proposals and clarifications of the appropriate methods of classifying organisms; of exciting new ideas about the nature of the fossil record and their implications for the elucidation of evolutionary mechanisms; and of ways in which the biological study of behavior has been extended, theoretically and experimentally, and of supposed implications for humankind. To add to these internal issues, the outside world has also seen much debate on biology - in the world of education, for instance.

These and other issues have made biology one of the most exhilarating areas of science, and have aroused in biologists and philosophers an awareness that there is a need for meta-theoretical analysis, both about the very nature of biology, as well as about its social implications.

Biology and Philosophy is aimed at a broad readership, drawn from both the sciences and the humanities. The journal subscribes to no specific school of biology, nor of philosophy, and publishes work from authors of all persuasions and all disciplines. The editorial board reflects this attitude in its composition and its world-wide membership.

Each issue of Biology and Philosophy carries one or more discussions or comparative reviews, permitting the in-depth study of important works and topics

Our online manuscript submission and review system offers authors the option to track the progress of the review process of manuscripts in real time. Manuscripts should be submitted to: http://biph.edmgr.com

The online manuscript submission and review system for Biology and Philosophy offers easy and straightforward log-in and submission procedures. This system supports a wide range of submission file formats: for manuscripts - Word, WordPerfect, RTF, TXT and LaTex; for figures - TIFF, GIF, JPEG, EPS, PPT, and Postscript.

NOTE: By using the online manuscript submission and review system, it is NOT necessary to submit the manuscript also in printout + disk.
In case you encounter any difficulties while submitting your manuscript on line, please get in touch with the responsible Editorial Assistant by clicking on “CONTACT US?from the tool bar.

Books for review may be sent to Kim Sterelny.

Electronic figures
Electronic versions of your figures must be supplied. For vector graphics, EPS is the preferred format. For bitmapped graphics, TIFF is the preferred format. The following resolutions are optimal: line figures - 600 - 1200 dpi; photographs - 300 dpi; screen dumps - leave as is. Colour figures can be submitted in the RGB colour system. Font-related problems can be avoided by using standard fonts such as Times Roman, Courier and Helvetica.

Language
We appreciate any efforts that you make to ensure that the language is corrected before submission. This will greatly improve the legibility of your paper if English is not your first language.

Manuscript Presentation
The journals language is English. British English or American English spelling and terminology may be used, but either one should be followed consistently throughout the article. Leave adequate margins on all sides to allow reviewers remarks. Please double−space all material, including notes and references. Quotations of more than 40 words should be set off clearly, either by indenting the left−hand margin or by using a smaller typeface. Use double quotation marks for direct quotations and single quotation marks for quotations within quotations and for words or phrases used in a special sense. A manuscript should be a maximum of 35 pages in length, including footnotes.

Number the pages consecutively with the first page containing:

article type

title

author(s)

affiliation(s)

full address for correspondence, including telephone and fax number and E−mail address

Abstract

Please provide a short abstract of 100 to 250 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references. Since the abstract will be used to select appropriate reviewers, it is essential to make it as informative as possible.

Key Words

Please provide 5 to 10 key words or short phrases in alphabetical order. Since the key words will be used to select appropriate reviewers, it is essential to make them as informative as possible.

Article Types

regular article

review

Units

All scientific or technical data included in the text should be stated in the metric and other absolute (c.g.s.) systems. The use of English or other regional systems of units should be avoided.

Section Headings

First−, second−, third−, and fourth−order headings should be clearly distinguishable. Numbering them (e.g., 1., 1.1, 1.1.1, 2., 2.1, etc.) is optional.

Appendices

Supplementary material should be collected in an Appendix and placed before the Notes and Reference sections.

Notes

Please use endnotes rather than footnotes. Notes should be indicated by consecutive superscript numbers in the text and listed at the end of the article before the References. The references should also be collected in a list at the end of the article. A source reference note should be indicated by means of an asterisk after the title. This note should be placed at the bottom of the first page.

Cross−Referencing

n the text, a reference identified by means of an authors name should be followed by the date of the reference in parentheses and page number(s) where appropriate. When there are more than two authors, only the first authors name should be mentioned, followed by et al.. In the event that an author cited has had two or more works published during the same year, the reference, both in the text and in the reference list, should be identified by a lower case letter like a and b after the date to distinguish the works.

Examples:
Winograd (1986: 204)
(Winograd 1986a, b)
(Winograd 1986; Flores et al. 1988)
(Bullen and Bennett 1990)

Acknowledgements

Acknowledgements of people, grants, funds, etc. should be placed in a separate section before the References.

References

References to books, journal articles, articles in collections and conference or workshop proceedings, and technical reports should be listed at the end of the article in alphabetical order, following the journal style (see examples below). Articles in preparation or articles submitted for publication, unpublished observations, personal communications, etc. should not be included in the reference list but should only be mentioned in the article text (e.g., T. Moore, personal communication).

References to books should include the authors name; year of publication; title; page numbers where appropriate; publisher; place of publication, in the order given in the example below.

Boyd, R. and Richerson, P.J.: 1985, Culture and the Evolutionary Process, The University of Chicago Press, Chicago.

Figures
All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as a 'Figure' and they should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). Multi-part figures ought to be labelled with lower case letters (a, b, etc.). Please insert keys and scale bars directly in the figures. Relatively small text and great variation in text sizes within figures should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size. Figures may be sized to fit approximately within the column(s) of the journal. Provide a detailed legend (without abbreviations) to each figure, refer to the figure in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Please place the legends in the manuscript after the references.

Tables
Each table should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). In tables, footnotes are preferable to long explanatory material in either the heading or body of the table. Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be placed immediately below the table. Please provide a caption (without abbreviations) to each table, refer to the table in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Finally, please place the tables after the figure legends in the manuscript.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Corrected proofs should be returned within three days of receipt.
Offprints
Twenty−five offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered by means of an offprint order form supplied with the proofs.
Page Charges and Colour Figures
No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions except for colour pages. The author will be contacted regarding costs and invoicing if the manuscript includes colour figures.
Copyright
Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article, to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.
Permissions
It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission for a quotation from unpublished material, or for all quotations in excess of 250 words in one extract or 500 words in total from any work still in copyright, and for the reprinting of figures, tables or poems from unpublished or copyrighted material.
Springer Open Choice
In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription−based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springers online platform SpringerLink. To publish via Springer Open Choice, upon acceptance please click on the link below to complete the relevant order form and provide the required payment information. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will publish as regular subscription−model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.
