About the journal

Literature and Theology, a quarterly peer-review journal, provides a critical non-confessional forum for both textual analysis and theoretical speculation, encouraging explorations of how religion is embedded in culture. Contributions should address questions pertinent to both literary study and theology broadly understood, and be consistent with the Journal's overall aim: to engage with and reshape traditional discourses within the studies of literature and religion, and their cognate fields - biblical criticism, literary criticism, philosophy, politics, culture studies, gender studies, artistic theory/practice, and contemporary critical theory/practice.

Abstracting and Indexing Services

Literature and Theology is covered by the following abstracting/indexing services

The first page must give: title of paper, contributors names, the full address of the author designated to receive proofs/correspondence, a current email address, and the total word count of the article (articles over 6000 words will not normally be considered). A short abstract of about 100 words must be included for publication. Manuscripts will not normally be returned unless stamped addressed envelope is enclosed.

A letter of submission should accompany each paper with full details of the address and email of the corresponding author. Authors are also asked to submit their final version of their contribution electronically by email attachment.

Numbered references should appear at the end of the article and should consist of the author's name and initials, year, title of paper, full title of journal, volume, initial and terminal page numbers. References to books or chapters within them should include names and initials of editors, page numbers, place of publication and name of publisher e.g.: M.M. Religious Studies Review 14 (1988) 320-6. Biblical references should be cited thus: Genesis 23:13-14.

Proofs

Authors will receive a PDF proof of their article by email and it is essential that a current email address is supplied with the manuscript. Proofing instructions will accompany the PDF file but the proof should be checked immediately and returned to the editorial office.

Offprints

Authors of articles will receive three copies of the issue in which their article is published, in addition to a url to enable online access, free of charge. Authors of shorter Notices/Reports and book reviewers will receive one copy of the issue in which their paper appears, in addition to a free url to their paper. Authors can buy offprints at reasonable prices by returning an offprint order form.

Copyright

Manuscripts submitted will be expected to contain original work and should not have been published in abridged or other form elsewhere. It is a condition of publication in the Journal that authors grant an exclusive licence to Oxford University Press. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In granting the licence, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that Literature & Theology is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance. Please complete and return a Licence to Publish form.
