About the journal

Since 1960 Labour History Review has explored the working lives and politics of 'ordinary' people, and has played a key role in redefining social and political history.

Labour History Review publishes up to 12 fully-refereed articles in its three issues each year. The emphasis is on British labour history, though the journal also includes comparative and international studies. The editors welcome contributions which dig deeper within the traditional subject matter of labour history, but they are also keen to expand the parameters of the subject and the range of approaches taken to it. They are particularly interested in articles which engage with issues of gender and ethnicity or race, as well as class.

Labour History Review also features book reviews (essays and short notices) and a new section which reviews museums, heritage 'experiences' and exhibitions from the standpoint of the labour historian. There is also an annual bibliography giving an overview of the year's publications, theses and dissertations in labour history and a comprehensive listing of relevant archival accessions

Instructions to Authors

Submissions

Labour History Review welcomes contributions in any area of labour history. We are particularly interested in articles which engage with issues of gender and ethnicity or race, as well as class, and which attempt to broaden the traditional subject matter of labour history. It is a condition of publication that papers become the copyright of the Society for the Study of Labour History and that they are original and are not under consideration elsewhere.

To submit papers please contact Don MacRaild, University of Ulster, Coleraine Campus, Coleraine, Northern Ireland, E-mail: d.macraild@ulster.ac.uk.

Contributors should submit an abstract and three copies of the article in hard copy with a disk containing the abstract and the article in Word or Wordperfect (PC readable). All articles will be anonymously refereed so personal details (name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address and contact details) should be separated from the article and abstract. Typescripts and disks should be prepared in accordance with the MHRA Style Guide (2008). This is obtainable in print format for £6 and is also downloadable from the Modern Humanities Research Association website at www.style.mhra.org.uk. Articles should normally be no more than 8,000 words, excluding endnotes. Abstracts should be 150-200 words and summarise the contents of the paper. The article and the endnotes must be double-spaced.
Copyright
Authors who wish to reproduce material from previously published sources or where the copyright is owned by a third party, such as sections of text, tables or images, must obtain written permission from the copyright holder (usually the publisher) and the author(s)/artist(s) of the original material. A line giving the full source of the material should be included in the manuscript. Copyright is required for use in all formats (including digital), in perpetuity and in all geographical regions worldwide. For more information and advice please see
www.maney.co.uk/authors/copyright.
Permissions
Any reproduction from Labour History Review, apart from for the purposes of review, private research or 'fair dealing', must have the permission of the Society for the Study of Labour History. Requests for such permission must be addressed to Permissions Section, Maney Publishing,
permissions@maney.co.uk, who act on behalf of the Society. In all cases, acknowledgement must be made to Labour History Review.
Tables, graphs, maps, illustrations
Tables should be prepared with the size and capacity of the page in mind and should be provided separately in the typescript, keyed horizontally from left to right using a tab between columns, not the space bar, or keyed in Table mode in Word or WordPerfect. Sources should be indicated. Citation will be in the form (Table 1). Contributors should provide good quality illustrations in the form of glossy prints and clearly drawn and lettered maps, line drawings and graphs. Citation will be in the form (Fig. 1). Authors should indicate where in the text the table, map, etc., should appear with a marginal note. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet. The author will be required to provide electronically submitted images in CMYK format as TIFF or EPS files at high resolution suitable for printing. As a guideline, images should be submitted at a minimum input scanning resolution of 300 dpi for full colour, 350-400 dpi for half tones, 600 dpi for slides or transparencies, 800 dpi for simple line and 1200 dpi for fine line illustrations. Please note that the final reproduction quality is dependent on the quality of the original illustration. The author will be required to provide written evidence of permission to reproduce images (in all formats, in perpetuity and in all geographical regions worldwide) from the copyright owner for the use of any illustrative matter in the journal and will be liable for any fee charged by the owner of the image. The caption should include relevant credit of the permission of the copyright holder to reproduce the image. For more information please see www.maney.co.uk/authors/copyright.
Online Colour
It is possible for colour illustrations to be published in the online version of Labour History Review free of charge. Images submitted in colour will be published in greyscale in the printed journal (unless otherwise agreed with the journal editor) but will be posted online in colour. Authors should consider the use of colour within their article carefully to ensure meaning is not lost in the translation of images from colour to greyscale for the printed volume. Authors should bear this in mind when preparing the format of the images for submission and when obtaining permission to use material from third parties. For more information please see www.maney.co.uk/authors/copyright.
Proofs and offprints
Authors will be asked to correct proofs, confining their corrections to typographical errors. There may be a charge for author's alterations at proof stage. Proofs should be returned to the Editor within 72 hours of receipt. Contributors will receive 25 offprints and one copy of the journal to be shared between co-authors. Additional offprints may be ordered at cost. Offprints are usually despatched three weeks after publication of the issue.

Contributors to Labour History Review are entitled to buy copies of the issue where their article appears or full individual* subscriptions to the journal at a 20% discount on the RRP.
