Editorial Instructions for Contributors
Articles and short notes submitted for publication in Biblica are expected to conform to these instructions, which replace the Instructions published in Biblica 1998. If manuscripts depart from these instructions in major ways, they may be returned to authors for reworking before they are considered for publication.
Biblica accepts contributions in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. In no case should articles that appear elsewhere in the same or a different language be submitted to this journal.
It is assumed that manuscripts received are in their final form with no changes expected later. Authors are kindly asked to send a carefully edited version of their manuscript and also send us full information on their academic degree, position and address.
Contributions submitted for publication should not be longer than 61,000 characters, not including spaces and be accompanied by a summary of about 100 words (or less, in the case of short communications) giving their main point and principal arguments. Footnotes should be "created" as such, i.e. at the bottom of the page to which they refer, and normally should not occupy more than 1/3rd to 2/5th of the whole text. Titles of articles should not be longer than 12 words (including biblical quotations).
All authors should send us together with the printed manuscript . at least after their articles have been accepted . a storage medium with the electronic version of the article (Mac or PC), if possible written using Microsoft Word or Word Perfect programs. An electronic version of the document could also be sent by e-mail as an attached file. Please use for this purpose the following e-mail address: biblica@bsw.org.
For non-Latin characters, it is requested that contributors employ our re-commended fonts (Bible Works fonts, Super Hebrew and Super Greek fonts or Scholars Press fonts). The latter, created by Scholars Press for use in its on-line journal is kindly shared with authors and other journals. Hebrew, Greek, Syriac and Coptic fonts are currently available for use with both Mac and PC systems. Authors may be able to download the SP fonts from our on-line edition by a very simple procedure. If this is impossible, they should employ fonts which are commonly used, and send us them in the electronic version (by diskette or e-mail) together with their printed manuscript.
Normally the unpointed consonantal text of Hebrew or Aramaic is to be used. If the text being discussed calls for the vocalised form of the words, they may be pointed. We ask our contributors not to employ any of the existing transliteration systems, except for conjectural isolated forms which are not present in the Bible. In this case authors should send us a PC version of the font they are using together with the manuscript.
The use of Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic quotes must be limited to essential words. The possibilities opened up by electronic biblical programs, to which most biblical scholars have access, mean that it is no longer necessary to overburden articles with long quotations in non-Latin characters.
We ask authors to give special attention to all bibliographic references in the footnotes, wherein they should indicate the exact page numbers of the monograph or article (in a journal or collective work) that are important for their statements.
Names of authors in the footnotes should be given in the following way: initial(s) of the first name(s), then the family name in full (in Small capitals), followed by a comma. This should be followed by the title of the book in italics, then in parenthesis the series and volume number followed by a semicolon (;) and the place and year of publication without any mention of the publisher. The relevant page numbers should be given outside the parenthesis, without p., pp., S. or SS.

Titles of articles (from periodicals, collected works and Festschriften) should be given in normal characters and between quotation marks.
Journals should always be referred to in the same way, i.e. abbreviated name of journal followed by the number of the volume, the year of publication (in parenthesis) and the page numbers. The place of publication of journals should not be mentioned unless the journal is not well known. In no case should the name of the publisher be given.
Descriptions of collected works and Festschriften . besides the full title in italics and the subtitle in regular characters . should also contain (in parenthesis) the name(s) of editor(s) (in Small capitals), then (also in parenthesis) the series and volume number followed by a semicolon (;) and the place and year of publication (without any mention of the publisher).
Abbreviations of names of periodicals, reference works and series in which books are published should be those used in Biblica (see the list below). For all the abbreviations non present in the list please use those proposed in S. Schwertner, International glossary of abbreviations for theology and related subjects (=IATAG2) (Berlin . New York 1992) (with the titles of periodicals and books italicized, and titles of series and the acronyms of the authors. names when used as sigla in regular characters).

After the first mention of a book or article, authors are asked to employ in subsequent quotations the short form (family name of the author, key words of the title, page, without p. or S.). Biblica does not employ Idem or Ibidem (Id,; Ibid.).
Our style of quoting Scripture is to be used: Gen 2,4-8; Isa 41,3.7.9; Rom 4,11.5,3. Biblical abbreviations have not a period. Between chapter and verse a comma, rather than a colon, should be used. References to one or more verses of texts previously cited should employ the form v. 1; vv. 2-4 (German also uses V. and VV.). V. VV. v. or vv. are always to be followed by a dot and a space before the numbers. The abbreviations f. ff. or s. ss. to indicate .following., .folgende(n)., .siguiente(s)., .suivant(s)., .seguente/i. should be avoided.
