About the journal

Co-herencia. Revista de Humanidades

La revista Co-herencia editada por el Departamento de Humanidades de la Universidad EAFIT, es una publicación semestral que tiene como propósito difundir informes derivados de investigación, reflexiones teóricas, debates especializados, traducciones, ensayos y reseñas críticas en torno a temas relacionados con los estudios humanísticos en general y con las áreas de literatura, filosofía, comunicación, estética, historia, musicología y ciencia política en particular. Co-herencia está dirigida a profesores, investigadores, estudiantes y estudiosos de las disciplinas o saberes que concursan en el amplio espectro de los estudios humanísticos, pero también a otros lectores con afinidades por los temas académicos que se priorizan en cada número. Pretende ser un foro de discusión interdisciplinaria y un espacio de diálogo entre pares sobre los aportes de las humanidades en la configuración de una comunidad pensante y deliberante en Colombia.


 

Focus and Scope

Co-herencia is a half-yearly journal published by the Humanities Department at EAFIT University. Its purpose is to disclose findings generated by investigations, theoretical reflections, specialized debates, translacions, essays, and critical reviews on topics related to humanistic studies in general, and associated with literature, philosophy, history, politics and communication studies in particular. Co-herencia is directed towards professors, researchers, students, and scholars within the disciplines or knowledge areas which comprise the ample spectrum of humanistic studies, but also to other readers with an affinity for the scholarly topics compiled in each volume. Its purpose is to be a forum of interdisciplinary discussion and a space for dialogue among peers on the contributions of humanities in determining a thinking and deliberating community in Colombia

Peer Review Process

Cada uno de los artículos recibidos es sometido a un proceso de revisión y selección en dos etapas: interno por parte de algún miembro del Comité Editorial que evaluará la originalidad y pertinencia del artículo, y posteriormente, externo a cargo de un árbitro quien conceptuará sobre su calidad científica, estructura, fundamentación, manejo de fuentes y rigor conceptual. Dentro de los dos meses siguientes al envío del texto, el autor será notificado del resultado de los procesos de evaluación.

Co-herencia journal (Humanities Department, EAFIT University) is geared towards the publication of un-published articles within the categories indicated by Colciencias for scientific journals: the results of research or advancement in research, generally employing a four section structure: introduction, methodology, results and conclusions (Scientific research article); academic essays in which the results of research regarding a specific subject are presented from an analytical, interpretive or critical perspective, by recurring to original sources (Reflection article derived from research); and studies in which research results within a particular scientific field are analyzed, systematized and integrated, to evidence advancement and development tendencies; these exhibit a bibliographic review of at least 50 references (Review Article). Translations and bibliographic reviews are also included.

In addition to correspondence with the preceding typology, another selection criteria is that the article belong to one of the subject areas of importance of the Journal, in particular, literature, philosophy, history, politics and communication studies. Each one of the articles received is subjected to a two-step revision and selection process: internal by one of the members of the Editorial Board who will evaluate the originality and pertinence of the article. Subsequently an anonymous referee will consider the scientific worth, structure, basis, use of sources, and conceptual rigor of the potential article. Within the two months following the submittal of the text, the author will be notified of the evaluation process results.

 

Formal requirements

• Besides assuring it is an un-published article, the author will abstain from presenting the article for review concurrently to various journals whether national or international.

• Texts must include: the punctuation, accentuation and grammar in accordance with the rules of grammar and good use of the language in which the article is written. Corrections in style and form may be suggested.

• All the terms and expressions not in the language in which the text is written, must be italicized.

• The proponents may be professors or graduate students of local institutions, national and international, as well as academics and independent researchers.

• Other than Spanish, texts will be received in Portuguese, English, Italian and French.

• Estimated length is:

- Research and review articles: between 5,000 and 10,000 words

- Case study: between 2,500 and 3,000 words

- Reviews: between 500 and 1,000 words

 

Regarding the structure

• A title which clearly states the subject matter.

• Information about the author: (nationality, field of study, recent publications, institutional affiliations and e-mail address).

• An abstract and keywords written in the language of the article and in English, their length respectively, 100 to 150 words and 5 to 7 words.

• The title of the article in the other language.

• Indicate the origin of the text (if a research text, the project it is ascribed to and the group of which it is part, as well as the Institution supporting it).

 

Citations and references

• For such effects the Journal adheres to the format established by the American Psychology Association (APA).

• Citations and references must be included in the text according to the following format. (Author’s last name, year of publication, colon, and page number). Example: (Garcia, 1997: 45).

• A complete Bibliography must appear at the end of the article, all the cited or referenced texts must be listed alphabetically by author without numbers or vignettes.

• Footnotes will only be used for explanations or additional comments. They should not include bibliographical references, except when expanding on those cited.

• When confronting another text, the following will appear in parenthesis: Cfr, the author’s last name and year of publication.

• If more that one work by a particular author was consulted, the works must be organized by date beginning with the earliest.

• If length citations exceed three lines, they must be placed in a separate paragraph and a centimeter to the right of the general margin.

 

Bibliography

Book

Author’s last name and first name, or first letter of name (only the first letter in upper case, separated by a comma) and year of publication (in parenthesis). Book title and subtitle (in italics and only the first letter in upper case respectively). City of publication and publishing house name separated by a colon.

 

Example: Sánchez, Gonzalo (1991) Guerra y política en la sociedad colombiana. Bogotá: Ancora.

 

Book chapter

Author’s last and first name, or first letter of name (only the first letter in upper case, separated by a comma), year of publication (in parenthesis), chapter title in quotation marks followed by the reference “In:”, academic publisher or series editor and title of the same, which must appear in italics; city of publication and name of publishing house, separated by a colon.

 

Example: Ariza, Carolina (2008) “La teoría constitucional de la federación, de Carl Schmitt”. In: Jorge Giraldo – Jerónimo Molina (Eds.) Carl Schmitt. Derecho, políticas y grandes espacios. Medellín: EAFIT University, Organization of Political Studies of the Murcia Region.

 

Serial publications (magazine or newspaper)

Author’s last name and first name, or first letter of name (only the first letter in upper case, separated by a comma), year of publication, include month and day if a journal or weekly publishing. Article title in quotation marks and journal or newspaper title in italics (Issue or volume), the inscription “In:”, name of the principal source, Volume (Vol.), edition number (No.), city of publication and institution of the journal, ending with the page numbers. Journal example: Uribe de Hincapié, María Teresa – López Lopera, Liliana María (2008). “Discourse on forgiveness and punishment during the Colombian Civil War from 1859 to 862”. In: Co-herencia, Vol. 5, No. 8 (January – June), Medellín, Universidad EAFIT, pp. 83-114. Newspaper example: Arango, Rodolfo (2009, April 15). “Exclusión e inclusión”. In: El Espectador, Bogotá.

 

Internet publications

Author’s last and first name (first letters in upper case, separated by a comma), year of publication in parenthesis. Title of the article in quotation marks. «En:» (first letter in upper case and colon), URL address (“Uniform Resourse Locator”) and date of enquiry in parenthesis (month, year). Example: Bobbio, Norberto (1994) “Causes for political philosophy”. In: http://www.isonomia.itam.mx/ (Visited February 7, 2008).

 

Regarding the presentation

• Texts must be submitted in electronic format, using the program Word.

• Photographs, images, maps and illustrations should be attached in digital format at a minimum 300 dpi. Their location should be described in the text, along with the pertinent information.

• Graphics, tables and other similar elements must be tab-delimited (do not use Word’s “Insert Table”).

• Images, photographs, illustrations, tables, graphics and alike must have a corresponding Image footer referencing the series number, name of the work (in italics), author, origin, technique, date of creation and other pertaining information.

• The text must adhere to this Author’s Guide. Only if presented following these guidelines, the text will enter to the evaluation process.

• The Humanities Department at EAFIT University, with the support of the “Luis Echavarría Villegas” Library, finances the editing, publication and distribution of each issue. The authors instantaneously assent to the publication of their essays, relinquish the author’s proprietary rights and assert that the work is un-published. The Director or Editor must be expressly informed of any situation divergent with the preceding.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
