About the journal
Description:
African Archaeological Review publishes articles on African archaeology, highlighting the contributions of the region as they relate to key global issues. Important topics include the emergence of modern humans, earliest manifestations of human culture, and the origins of African plant and animal domesticates. Contributions feature timely continental and subcontinental studies covering cultural continuities and discontinuities; interregional interactions; biocultural evolution; cultural dynamics and ecology; the role of cultural materials in politics and ideology; the application of ethnohistorical, textual, and ethnoarchaeological data in archaeological interpretation; conservation; management of cultural heritage, information technology, and public archaeology. Papers present new field data from key excavation sites or localities aimed at understanding interregional processes, major cultural changes, and transitions in Africa's past, and Africa's place in world archaeology.

Submission, General
Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible. Type double−spaced on one side of 8 ??11 inch or A4 white paper using generous margins on all sides. All copies must be dark, sharp, and clear. Computer−generated manuscripts must be of letter quality (not dot−matrix). |
Elements Order
title page, abstract, key words, text, appendix, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure−caption list. All acknowledgments (including those for grant and financial support) should be typed in one paragraph on a separate page that directly precedes the References section.
Title Page
A title page is to be provided and should include the title of the article, author´s name (no degrees), author´s affiliation, suggested running head, and the archaeological time period, country, and region discussed in the manuscript. The affiliation should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city, and state (or nation) and should be typed as a footnote to the author´s name. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof. For office purposes, the title page should include the complete mailing address, telephone number, and fax number of the one author designated to review proofs.
Abstracts
An abstract (in both English and French) is to be provided, preferably no longer than 150 words.
Key Words
A list of 6 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes, and should include the region and archaeological period discussed in the manuscript.
Illustrations
Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals. The captions for illustrations should be submitted on a separate page. Electronic artwork should be in the TIFF or EPS format (1200 dpi for line and 300 dpi for half−tones and gray−scale art). Color art should be in the CYMK color space. Artwork should be separate from the text.
Tables
Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Center the title above the table, and type explanatory footnotes (indicated by superscript lowercase letters) below the table.
List References
List references alphabetically at the end of the paper and refer to them in the text by name and year in parentheses. Where there are three or more authors, only the first author´s name is given in the text, followed by et al. References should include (in this order): last names and initials of all authors, year published, title of article, name of publication, volume number, and inclusive pages. The style and punctuation of the references should conform to that used in the journal ?illustrated by the following examples:
Journal Article Robertshaw, P. (1995). The last 200,000 years (or thereabouts) in Eastern Africa: Recent archaeological research. Journal of Archaeological Research 3: 55−−86. |
Book Wendorf, F., Schild, R., Close, A. E., and Associates (1993). Egypt During the Last Interglacial: The Middle Paleolithic of Bir Tarfawi and Bir Sahara East, Plenum Press, New York. |

Footnotes
Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and should be typed at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Place a line above the footnote, so that it is set off from the text. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.
Scales and Measurements
The metric system should be used for scales and measurements, with the English equivalents if originally in English. When used with numerals, units should be abbreviated with no punctuation (e.g., 3 cm, 4 g, 25%). Radiocarbon dates with laboratory numbers should be expressed either bp (before present) according to 5568−year half−life, cal AD and cal BC for tree−ring calibrated age determinations, and AD and BC for calendric dates. Cardinal directions should be spelled out, but other directions abbreviated (e.g., NE, WNW). Foreign (non−English) words should be underlined and a translation provided.
